Irregular bleeding
is cause for worry
By ELEANOR B.
RODGERSON, M.D.
Q. I have been spotting be-
tween periods for about a
year. It usually lasts about
two or three days. I have had
a Pap test about three months
ago and it was negative. My
doctor said not to worry about
it and he would not prescribe

anything for it. I am 27 years
old and have two children. I
would like to know if anything
can be done without surgery?
A. -We -always worry about
irregular bleeding. There
may be a good reason for the
bleeding, but we worry Unless
we can find the cause.
Some women have spotting
at the time of ovulation which
occurs, on the average, 14
days before a menstrual peri-
od. Some women have spot-
ting from a cervicitis, an in-
flammation of the mouth of
the womb, due to such things
as Trichomonasvaginalis, but
this type of spotting does not
appear at regular intervals. It
may be anytime, particularly
with intercourse. Other worn -
en have breakthrough bleed-
ing with oral contraceptives,
and, finally, there can be ab-
normality developing any-
where 'in the genital organs.
It would be a good idea for
you to let your doctor know
that your problem is continu-
ing. He may want to check
your pelvic examination
again and to repeat your Pap
test: It often takesmore than
one examination to find the
cause.
With persistent bleeding, it
may be necessary to do an en-
dometrial biopsy (take a sam-
ple of the lining of the uterus),
or a currettage (a more thor-
ough scraping ), These last
two procedures are minor
surgery, but are the means of
finding out what is happening
inside the uterus. Only occa-
sionally are cells from the lin-
ing- of the uterus found oh the
Pap smear, which scrapes
just the visible cervix and the
vagina.

Russians are puzzled
by signals from space
Soviet scientists have re-
corded radio signals from
space that they have never re-.
ceived before. The ,signals
come in pulses after definite
lapses of time. °
Prof. Samuel Kaplan of
Gorky University says it is too
early to say if they are natural
or artificialely produced sig-
nals but it is clear that they
are not signals from earth
satellites.

Japanese dishes flavored

Nakano says his cooking is

Caucasian tastes." .

CHILD'S PLAY
Make a snowman for all seasons
HUNTSINGER
The 'old proverb, "Other
Pastures are always greener"
seems literally true this time
of year. People who live in
cold climates think fondly of
southern sun or baliny islands
where they can get away from
winter's bite.
On the other hand, folks who
live in all -year mildness such
as Florida or Southern Cali-
fornia, plan their vacations so
they can ski or enjoy snow
sports.
Om popular myth often
heard is that "nowadays it
snows less than it did years
ago." Actually, weather rec-
ords kept since the last half of
the 1800's show That it usually
averages out. Record snow-
falls are still being noted, as
people in Chicago discovered
in 1967, or those in Tahoe,
California found in 1952 when
the skies shook down enor-
mous quantities of flakes.
Rainier Paradise Ranger
Station' in Washington te-
corded 1,027 inches of snow
fr6m July, 1970 to June, 1971,
which seems to be an'all-time
record for one season. Silver.
Lake. ColOrado, wat covered
with 76 inches of the white
stuff in 1921, apparently still
an unbeaten high for a single
24 hour period.
Whether or not you have
ever had the fun of making a
real snowman on a sunny win-
try day, you can create one in
a matter of minutes even if
the temperature soars. All
you need are scissors, paste
and colorful paper.

illustration, it's nice if you can
start with a plastic meat tray
or box top lid.which can serve
as a ready-made frame. But
any type of background will
do.
Practice cutting circles and
get three that balance nicely,
just as three big snowballs
would. Tiny round pieces of
Contrasting colored paper
serve as eyes or buttons, even
mitts. Then, cut out a hat and
other ornaments.
It's surprisidg how much
character a broom, shovel,
scarf, pipe, glasses or other
additions can bring. Experi-
ment and make a whole fam-
ily of snow people if you vvish.
After these cut pieces are all
glued into place, you can be
certain of their lasting quali-
ties since no rising thermom-
eter brings any danger of this
type of snowman melting.
Summer or winter, the re-
sults will be a picture that
proves a bright addition to
thly wall.
PolicevOman has
arresting features
Robert Sawyer, 23, arrested
in London for operating a
three-card con game, said of
policewoman ,Janet Knott,
"She's the best -looking police
officer I have ever bedn ar-
rested by."
Magistrate St. John Harms-
worth told Sawyer, "The offi-
cer will be gratified to hear
that, but I don't think she will
be deterred from arresting
you again,- and fined him

"I often serve it ai a climax
