NOTES DICQT5NTD t MONEY TO LOAN ON NOTES AND MOBTGAGES Ulat Cuttv - THURSDAY, JULY ath, 1889. THE SEAFORTH EXPOSITOR ON FRENCH A 3GRESSION7 The Expositor, in its issue of the 28th ult. has along article on French aggression. It details the modes by which English, Speaking people are supplanted by French, the growth ot the French language in Ontario, and the greatuse of the French language in public schools in Eastern Ontario. It acknow- Mr. Robert Porter, M, P., or West Huron, visited Es constitu- ents last week and addressed them in public meetings at Clinton, Goderich tp., 13e1fast, Beumfller and Manchester. The chief topic of his discourses was the constitu- tional phase ot the Quebec legisla- tion in the Jesuits Estate Act. At all points was his explanation a.nd justlfication of the position taken by parliament considered satisfac- tory. At only one place, Belfast, was a vote of disapproval offered and it was defeated. It has been well remarked that they only are fit to be tree who know how to be just. MS PEOPLE of West HUTiOn. regardless of busy body political .wire pullers, are free and by en• dorsing Mr. Porter they have showu how to be just. A few soured politicians and fanatics are trying tomake believe they are the people, but Robert Porter has the confidence of the electorate of West Huron to a greater, extent than ever.---News-Record. Exeter delimit Conneil met on Thursday, O'ane g7th, pursaaot to e.djournment. All preseut, Minutes of previous meeting read Red gi.gtleo(viebdliG yeir7eVe M.'Bissett, eeconded T. H. Mark Clarke applied for relief, Moved. by T B Carling, sec. by W G Eissett, that Mr,Walters be allowed at the rate of $10, per month for support of Mark Clarke, during the pleasure of the Council, and Kr Clarke's good behavior, payment to date from 20 th of Jone.---Cs,rried. Road Commissioner applied for saw, his having been stolen.. Ii Creech was instructed to procure a suitable saw for the use of the eorporatioe. Connell acljournod to meet on Wednei. day IOth inst. ledges the force, truth, significan ce and future danger of the whole thing; but suggests a noyel cause and a morewonclerful and novel remedy, It lays the whole fault on the economical priticiples on which this country is govetned. The French live cheaply, buy no luxur- ies, consequently pay no Federal taxes. The French being such a miserable lot according to the Expositor. throws the whole onus ot Federal taxation on the. Eng- lish, who, hampered by this tax- atiou, cannot compete with the French and gradually succumb. That is the Expositor's cause. Then his remedy. Does he advise the people to imitate the French, live poorly, patronize the church, pay no duty aud thus compete? By no means. Be advises turnmg out the present Government, put- ting Mr. Laurier in power, there. by changing our fiscal system and presto. French aggression and increase ceases and English ascend- ancy triumphs. Was ever a more absurd and ridiculous pro- position more coolly proposed. The Expositor well knows the proper remedy :it it had moral courage enough to announce it. Quebec is essentially a French province. There the French language and fashions flourish and is guaran- teed. There let it flourish that no injustice be done the people. But Ontario is essentially an English speaking province with a future and with rights just as Quebec. English-speaking Ontario wants, no French in her public schools and will not long have it. As the Ex. positor says, the people largely rule in school matters. Just so. The Ontario people want to be distinctly understood that this is an English.speaking province and that if French people come here to 'live, they come and accept our institutions asthey find them and govern themselves according •to our modes. No injustice is done to:French in this way. They, knowing our ways, laws. and requirements deliberately choose a residence here, must also chooseto abide by our laws, etc. The Expositor knows full well that the cause and the renzedy are both well known to Mr. Mowat and G. W. Ross. The remedy is simply this: Mr. Mower s cabinet most enforce the law or retire. We must draw the line of No rench in Ontario Public Schools." Mr. Mowat in one day can remedy the whole matter, but he refuses to do so for fear of losing his French supporters in Ontario, and also offending and i juring his good friend and brother Grit premier, Mr. Mercier. Why can't the Expositor for once go to the bottom of this matter, tell the straight, whole truth atid not allow its party prejudice to lead it so far off the road of common honesty? An intelligent public willilaugh heartily at the Exposi. tor's ridiculous attempt to ex plain French matters. His ridicu lous cause and remedy would al most "make a horse laugh," to use avulgarism. No such absurd attempt as this to throw dust in the eyes of electors will succeed Mr. Expose tor I People are fully posted on this question, and no mis- state. ments ot Hon. G. W. Ross or report of a farce commission will blind ten people to the fact that it is full time to draw the line and enforce the law. And ii Mowat & Co. Will not do it, some one will . - Suniavais. and Kilrain, accompanied by the select thugs who patronize such entertainments, have departed for the battle ground near New Oreleans, where they will encounter each other next Monday. Mr. Muldoon assures the public that 3'Ir Sullivan was never in better condition, and is sure to win, and Mr. Mitchell reports that Mr. Kil- rain is a mass of knots and muscles, and can't be beaten, so affairs promise to be in thestate they would be in if an irre- sistible force encountered an immov- able body. Something will have to break. The San Francisco Argonaut contains an article which is well calculated to fill Americans with alarm. The subject is thegrowth and aggressiveness of Canada. The undeveloped resources of Canada are enormous, the results of explora- tions and expert investigation all bear testimony to the astonishing richness of this virain country, which is just begin- ning itt's career. It would be false modeaty for us not to admit these things. or can we deny that as a military power we are somewhat formid- able. Mits. TAYLOR, of Ouacock, poisoned her husband, and the jury convicted hei of murder in the second degree. As the law of Virginia provides that killng by poison is mur- der in the first degree, the court de- cides that the verdict wai erroneous. It also peintsout that a person cannot . . be put on trial for a higher grade ot of crime than that of crime which she has been convicted for the same offence. Consequently MPS. Taylor walks out of jail and is a candidate for matrimony instead of the gallows. ' Ix is said that the Queen has recently been concerning herself with the arrangement of royal funerals, and that Her Majesty has caused a long mem- orandum on the subject to be drawn up, with a variOy of new orders, which ex- tend to the most minute details. In future the body of a defunct male mem- ber of the royal family is to be placed in the coiSa in an attire of quite differ- ent material to that worn by a deceased female, and married people are not to be treated to the same as the unmarried. The Queen's solicitude extends even to the makers of the coffins, and there are copious directions concerning them. Embalming is absolutely prohibited. What are English farms coming to anyhow? It is said that a Cambridge- shire farm of 202 acres which was bought a few years ago for £10,000, and has had £3.000 spent upon it since, was sold a few weeks ago for 23,850, just 2850 more than the cost of the improve- ments. If that is anything like a fair sample of what is going on in England no wonder that farmers and landowners are getting discouraged. Letthe farmers come out to this country. They can get plenty of good land, and get it cheap too if they hurry up and. secure allotments before they are all taken. These western prairies of ours are the farming lands of the future. ortgage Sale VALUABLE Village Property IN HENSALL u-NDER AND BY VIRTUE,' OF a Power of sale contained in a certain regis- tered mortgage (whieli wilt be predueect the time of sate)lite, do byJohn Armstrong and wife to the Vendor, default liming been made in thapayment thereof, there will be sold by public) auction at x 7 REYNOLDS HOTEL, Iax V1.11.age O1-nansal,4, ON SATURDAY, the 8t1i day of thdy, 1889, At 3 o'clock p. in., by Mr. James Oto, auctioneer. subJeet to sueli conditions as shalt th.on be produeed, the toile wing property All and singular that certain parcel or trot of land and premises sithate lying and bang in the village of Homan, in the county of Enron and Province of Ontario, containing admeesurement one fifth of an aermbe the same more or less.
