English.
Our own young lad rebelled at
first when we trotted him off to
the little one -roomed school down
the road .that September he was
six. "I can't understandnothin'!"
he said. But by the time the
schoolmarm got around to pi-
ning the Christmas concert, his
French was good enough to land
him the role of one of the Wise -
men. ,44
It was that same December
when I discovered just how
honest Onesime had been when
he told me that he didn't think it
worthwhile to argue about differ-
ences of language and tradition. I
went down to his place one night
to borrow a drill and found his
yard full of cars. And when he
took me inside we passed through
a living room where a dozen or
more serious looking. people sat
around with Bibles on their
knees. I had the feeling we had
interrupted a service of some
kind.
"We'll camp out here in the
kitchen," Onesime said, closing
the door to the other room.
"Sorry," ,I said. "I didn't know
you had guests tonight."
•
"Well it's Friday you see, and
according to my wife's religion
that's when church is supposed to
be. They trade around,these
people, about where to have their
meetings, see? And every once in
awhile they land up here."
I put my ear to the door as One-
sime opened a quart of beer and I
heard enough of the speaker's
remarks to realize that there was
at least one part of his belief
about which there was no
mystery at all. These people cer-
tainly weren't Catholic.
"And how does it feel," I won-
dered, "to be a good Mick and
have to sit here in your own home
listening :to stuff like that?"
Onesime just laughed again
and said that these were actually
.very good people. Just happened
that was the way they HAD to,be-
lieve, that's all: "For all I know
they might even be right," he
Said. "I .don't let it worry me. I
pay my priest to figure out things
like that, and if he's wrong I don't
think the man upstairs is going to
blame me for it."

New Year's, that's all , . , When I
was:, a boy down Portneut way,
New Year's was always THE day
anyhow. That was the time .yet;#
roasted the goose, see? And
maybe you got a present and ab
orange or two and the old man
gave you his blessing. So it isn't
so rough on me this way ... One
thing it's sure as hell cheaper
buying presents just after Christ-
mas than before. And you can
find a tree for free in your neigh-
bor's snowbank. No, it makes my
wife happy this way and I never
let it worry me. Like I told you
when you first came here, we've
got so many important things to
fit, i,t about we can't waste time
arguing over little stuff."
A few weeks later I sampled
Onesime's New .Year's day and I
was sure that its richness and
hilarity . came from something
more than the homemade wine he
had brought up from the cellar.
And. the more I think of it, . the
more I am convinced that on that
Friday night he opened his house
to those Bible people, it . was
really himself who had the ser-
mon. I am convinced too that in
his New Year's celebration there
was a reminder to all of us that
we in Quebec have a unique obli-
gation to ,show this whole crazy
fighting world that there are
indeed far.more important things
1 for us to argue about than slrch
piddling matters as the other
man's language and religion.
