Saint Lucia's Day
Happy In. Swe ,en
Lucia has always been loved in
southern Europe. The name
Lucia means "light". Since the
saint supposedly became , blind
at the darkest season of the year,
people . think it fitting to honor
her with many lights. •
Santa Lucia of Sicily became
the Lucia Bride of Sweden.
.Luc'adagen is a happy occasion
not Only because of the tradition-
al refreshments and fun, but be-
cause the day supposedly marks
the completion of the busiest hol-
iday chores. Young people have
finished their Christmas gifts. The
farmer has threshed and put -his
farm to order.. As for the house-
wife, she has- made the . tallow.
dips, scoured the copper; serub-
bed the floors and started to pre-
pare tbe.lutfisk or stockfish. This
fish is traditional to the Christ-
mas dinner and the most impor-
tant_ item on the ';menu. It re-
quires -three . .weeks of soaking,
Cleaning, and scrubbing before it
is ready to cook, •

As winter deepens, most families are more confined to their
homes. At the first sign of change, the lengthening of daylight, there
is a cause for festivity. So Christmas has evolved into a family winter
celebration expressed ,in " the exchange of gifts as we. rejoice in
God's gift, ,
It is good to express ° ;Our love and appreciation nr; giftgiving,
and also to have so significant a day on. which to do it,: Though it,
may be "impossible to rettorse commercial trends; we can °renew our
faith in the original signs and theme bf Christmas by'' our daily
practice! Christian living. '

With Christman' just around the

Trays can be tokens of potential
tragedy if • not chosen with care,.
it canometimes bring serious in-
jury to a child. .There are about
700,000 toy related injuries each
year, according . to government
fi : res.
The Food . and Drug Adminis-
tration conducts intensive pre -
.Christmas toy safety Campaigns to
alert the public. They tell us
three important points: (4) • The
• need to buy with the child's safe-
ty as well as his enjoyment in
mind. (2) The need to match the
toy to the child's .age and develop-
ment. (Many toys have age group
labels) (3) The need to read in-
structions and to be sure the child
understands how to properly use
any toythat might cause injury
through misuse.

YuRREys YEAR ROUND
Turkeys, have become a year -
around feature at supermark-
ets, not Just a holiday treat as
they once were. One big reason
is thatfarmers have learned
to produce them more efficient-
ly and on a fuli•thne b*Sis.
Consumers increasingly have
turned to turkeys and other
poultry as prices have gone up
for beef and pork.
That fine old bird, the tur-
key, is rated one of the best
