Murray Gaunt,MPP Huron -Bruce •, Report from There has been a great deal of discussion this week about an energy conservation program in the event of a severe shortage 'this winter. Premier Davis in formed the Legislature that goverriment departments are studying methods (If conserving energy, and will publish sugges- tions, to assist people in coping with the situation. -Energy Mini- ster Darcy McKeough has men- tioned the possibility of banning Sunday driving, turning down thermostats in government buildings and closing public buildings during hours of infre- quent use. The education mini- ster is sending instructions to schools to. reduce temperatures, possibly use storm windows again and reduce lighting on bright days. • This week the estimates of the Ministry of -Agriculture are. be- fore the House. The minister of agriculture is pleased because the Ontario farmers are today re eeiving higher. prices. for their products,' although. he Was quite concerned forth ' e beef industry, prior to the imposition of the sur tax on American beef. Many farmers wish to take advantage of the improved income to re- place old implements and machinery. liroweirer, they. . are finding it difficult th do so, be- cause of an apparent shortage of agricultural equiOments. I brought to the attention of the Minister the possible severe shortage of fertilizer in Ontario. One of the problems iiThatiarge quantities of potash have been exported to the Far East and the U.S. and I suggested that the pro- vincial and federal governments should work out arrangements to stockpile fertilizer to prevent •shortages in,Ontario. It is obvious that the provincial and federal governments Should get together to ensure that our needs are met in this country before any further exports take place. Dean Riebieds of Guelph Uni- versity recently issued a report on the Ontario Ministry of Agri- culture and Food, in which he re- commended the phasing out of the College at Centralia. We were please to learn that .the Minister has decided, not to accept this recommendation. As I pointed out, the Theoretical or academic side of agriculture is the special- ity of Guelph College, whereas Centralia, Kempville and Ridge town Colleges are concerned with the practical side of farming. In addition, Centralia is located in the centre of some of the best farm land in the province. E Wawanosh Ok's payments At the November meeting of the East Wawanosh Township Council, chaired by Reeve rRoy Pattison, approval was given for the issuance of the final payment to Radford Construction Limited, Blythf plus deposit cheque re Cook Municipal Drain contract. Gerald McDowell was asked to contact the contractor for repairs to the pavilion at the East and West Wawanosh park. Approval was also given for payment of the school debenture when it falls due on Dec. 1 in the amount of $18,600. Road accounts amounting to $5,878.20 and general accounts of $1,227.01 were approved for pay- ment. Lakelet Mrs. Ella Webber was moved from Walkerton Hospital to the Fordwich Nursing Home, last Saturday. She would be very happy to see any old friends who might be in the area. Parueen's The provincial secretary for social development, The Hon. Robert Welch, was made Mini- ster for housing this week, and Liberal Leader Robert Nixon is dubious about this appointment. Ontario needs a full-time housing minister or housing will continue to be in short supply and highly priced. . There have been some changes in the Liberal Caucus following the recent leadership convention. •• • • " BAROQUE FRAMED Size, 7 1/4"x 10 3/8" se MIRRORS si Donald Deacon, • member *ter York Centre, las. been made de- puty leader, with specific re- sponsibility for party ,organiza- tion and co -Ordination, as well* policy making, James Breitji- aupt, member for Kitchener, has, been made House leader, which will leave Robert Nixon more time for meeting the people in ridings throughout the province and other responsibilitieSof the Leader.
