Early action
-saves bc,rn
Earlyr. detection by a neighbor
and fast action by the Harriston
fire department on Thursday
morning, Sept. 20, saved the barn
of John Armstrong of RR 1, Ford-
wish.
The fire, apparently caused by
a milking machine, was quickly,
extinguished by firemen who
used a chain saw to cut away a
beam which was burning. Neigh-
bors helped by removing bales of
straw piled above the burning
area on the second floor of the
barn. Damage was limited to
$500.
The barn contained the year's
hay and harvest crops.
The fire was first discovered by
a neighbor, Garfield Gibson of
RW 1, Fordwich, who arrived at
the Armstrong farm to assist Mr.
Armstrong with his early morn-
ing chores. Upon noticing the
flames,, Mr. Gibson quickly alert-
ed the Armstrong family who
then called firemen. The fire was
discovered between 6 and 7 a.m.
Mr. Armstrong's farm is locat-
ed on the sixth, concession of
Howick Township approximately
21 miles east of Fordwich.
