For ' some' reason or other,,
Canadian television viewers have
;two loves: hockey and panel
games. It has been no secret for
.yetars that NHL Hockey is the
tai st popular series of all CBC's

that it would last, so long? Frank- '
ly ,1 can't see why but there it is
and Who am I to argue with mil-
lio,s ;of my fellow Canadians?
mil-
l*,
in the summer of 1971,
another panel show began, as
merely a fill-in for another haif-
hour Show. The panelists'and host
fooled; around, not really expect-
ing:anything great to come of it;
it 'was just a profitable way to
spend='the summer. But the show
caught en and last summer it was
back, even more popular than the
year before.. So. popular, in fact,
that they extended it to run into
the fall and winter season. Now,
out ofToronto comes word that it
has been; renewed ;;for next fall
and, winter's programing and all
cast members have signed fat
contracts to be back.
By now you probably know that
I'm talking about "This is the
Law", a zany half-hour that roots
up all'sorts of silly laws, depicts
them in comedy - sketches star-
ring Paul Soles, then makes four
seemingly intelligent people
guess What he did wrongs Mostly
it is a half-hour of four people in-
terrupting each other, arguing
with each other and generally
telling us very little of impor-
tance.
The show's appeal may lie in
the people involved. Susan Keller
is a lovely gal; like Toby Robins
who .first joined the 'Challenge'
panel, no one really cares if she
has a brain or not; they're too
busy looking at the container!
Two witty guys, Hart Pomerantz,
part of the Pomerantz -Michaels
comedy team and fabmous for his
personification of the Canadian
beaver, and Larry Solway, keep
the jokes coming; Bill Charlton
and host Austin Willis try to keep
everything on an even keel and
the other panelists on the track.
Most important, these kids really
look as though they enjoy the
show, like each other's company
and generally have a real rapport
with each other. Every minute
seems to be fun for them and they
pass on this joy to their audience.
Lawbreaker Soles, of course, and
his faithful friend, policeman
Robert Warner, are always
entertaining; and I 'guess if a
show is entertaining, who cares if
you learn anything?
/ Anyway, if you like the show,
good news; it will be back, in its
sable old format, next fall.
The following year it went na-
tional and it'is becoming a very
popular summer series.
Featuring unusual things and
people that a panel must identify,
its appeal couldlie in the fact that

Halifax.: and Vancouver. Bost
Warren Davis remains the same
but panelists will be local.
Many of the `unidentifiable' ob-
jects will' come 'from our nation's
finest museums.

Following in the same tracks,
is another panel show, entitled
"What on Earth?". It began as a
sunlifler replacement in 1970, but
on a=l0ca1 Toronto channel only.
