THEY MAY WELL LAUGH,
To the Editor of the Exeter Tintes.
Sin.—The above is a remark that
fell Irom the lips of a prominent Con-
servative who told that the Reform
party were chuckling at the dilemma in
which Sir John's Government has been
thrown over the Jesuit question, and at
the brightening prospect a£ a return to
power of that party under the leader-
ship of Mr. Laurier through the seeed-
ing from the Gonaervative ranks of so
many of its members. It is no doubt a
truth that thinking men need to ponder
over, because it carries in its train
scores of considerations that it be-
comes ua to take into account. On the
right hand and left we hear of resolu-
tions condemning Sir John unspar-
ingly, while we hear nota word o£ con-
demnation for the reform party in' Que-
bec who rode into power on the Riel
agitation and who are the sole authors
of the cause of this present crisis. It
is also painful to know that those
loudest in condemnation are in many
cases the most ignorant of the whole
matter—young men and boys who have
not yet scarcely cut loose from their
mothers apron strings, and who have
secured sufficient education to pass
from the second class to the third—
men who know no more about the
history of the matter and about con-
stitutional law than they know about
theltieroglyphics on the pillars of Egypt,
write out and cause to be published,
resolutions condemning Sir John Mac-
donald and a score of other prominent
men who stood by Canada's Cradle at
confederation and whose names will
live in history and in the hearts of
grateful countrymen. as long as the
country lasts and long after their
traducers have mingled with the dust
from whence they came and their
'naives and graves forgotten. How
idle then it is for such boys and men
as these, to strive by mishrable mis-
representation fanatical ravings to
bring down upon this young and rising
country the horrors of a race and
revenge war. It is worse than idle --it
is most mischieveous and disgraceful.
Scarsely four years have passed over
our heads since we witnessed a most
pitiable display of race and creed pre-
judices, and to what a pitch of excite-
ment it raisid society here. There was
not a loyal Canadian in Ontario but
added his mite of dennunciation of the
French Catholics for their worse than
fanatical rantings anent the Ric' exe-
cution, and yet to -day right here in en-
lightened Ontario we are confronted by
just such another reckless display of
prejudice as we witnessed then. It is
worse, if possible, because with all our
ignorance and shorc comings we still
stand inferior to the inhabitant ofQue•
bee, and yet we say it fearlessly, we
are not displaying more judgment nor
common sense than they did. For
while they could not recognize justice
in the execution of one of their race
and religion, neither can we, it seems,
see that Sir John Macdonald and his
Government are not responsible for the
evil doings of the Grit Government of
Quebec. Now just as the Reform
party then seized that opportunity to
try to scale the battlements of office,
so to -day "they may well laugh" at the
Conservative patty who are allowing

to -day are condemning a Government
for being under the heel of Ronne that
four years ago won our plaudits for
vindicating the law on a rebel, in the
face of the most obstinate protest it
has ever been the lot of any govern-

in trying to show that this is not a ques-

this question, whose, editorials all along I
contained that calm statesmanlike ad, -
vire) of the editor of that journal and
worthy of the occasion, we notice
with regret that in one place in the
Eastern part of Ontario the course of
the Sentinel has been condemned but we.
venture the prediction that those who`
have prematurely condemned it, will
7 et be the loudest in their acclamations
in its praise, for the noble course pur-
sued by it all along the line, though
the air is full of clouds and murmuring
throateniags of the storm, yet we see
occasional glywpses of sunshine in the
evidence that people are beginning to
recognize the fact that this vexed ques-
tion has no place inthe arena of party
politics, but should be relegated to the
courts for settlement, whither it is
hastening with all its speed. Let us one
and all see to it that we take no rash
steps, make no hasty resolutions, and
thus avoid the old adage of acting in haste
and repenting at leisure.
Yours truly,

Txn repeal of the Scott Act was
voted on in heeds and Glenville, on
Thursday, the repeal carrying by over
1000 majority. It seems to have lost
its old time favor. In Elgin county,
the deficiency in the number of petition
era for the repeal of the act, it is said,
have more than made up, and the
second petition will be hung up it the
courthouse, St. Thomas, on May 3,
when after 10 days it wil be forwarded
to Ottawa.
Some time ago the U. S., Govern-
ment imposed an additional duty on
Canadian poultry entering their ports.
The Reform press fluttered terribly and
claimed it an act of retaliation; and ad-
vised the farmers' wives to cease raising
poultry. The retaliatory effects of the
increased duty have not as yet been
felt, for no earlier than last week a
very large shipment of poultry across
the border was made from London.
TRE Brewers' Journal, of London,
the recognized authority of the Eng-
lish trade, announces the result of
the experts' test of Canadian barley as
most gratifying as regards the powers
of germination ; in one case the per-
centage of growing cores was 99 per
cent., in another 88 per cent., which
would yield malt weighing 39 pounds
per bushel, ora value of 28 shillings
per quarter of 448 pounds delivered on
the Thames. The Journal concludes
that the imports will yield an ample
margin of profit, and prove of signal
utility for blending with English bar-
ley. The results of other experts' tests
are being submitted to the Dominion
authorities. —`
Ever and anon the Conservative papers
assert that Mr. Mowat uses the Licenses
eyrsten for political purposes, and when

give. they maintain a silence that is pro-
found. ;Seine tine ago we showed the
untrutbfullness of the assertions, and we

Will our confrere explain why Mr.
Williams of Dublin, who bad held a
license for several years, and who has
been hiehly respected, not a word of
complaint ever being uttered against
hien, has this year been refused a license,
and one issued to a Mr. McKenna, a
new applicant; To help the New Era
out, we might add that Mr. Williams is
a Tory and Mr. McKenna a Grit.

To tlta Editor of the 1 ,Teter Times
Sitz. --I observed a paragraph in last
week's Timis alluding to the wedding
cake question, which I considered was
very gentlemanly no doubt. However it
did not altogether snit my no'ion—there-
tore I ani constrained to state that I will
give you the whole figures used in solving
the problem. Then you or any other
competent person can see was it a slip of
sty pen or not to give 261S inches as one
girls share and not twice her's as was
quoted in the paragraph Well when I
went to school the contents of a cone were
found c,ut as follows.
2‘12x.7854x50-3=523ti which is the
whole contents of the cake. Then when
my learned friend divides this by two he
will find out that I have made two equal
Shares of the cake. Now the base of the
top part 1 found out to be 15.87 you know
in circulation decimals we always lose a
little cal ult fon Nowc heving the
lese 15
.87 and the parcr i nar39.7
of
the top part (which is o full cone) it is
easily matte out, viz: -15.8755 x .7854 x 39.-
.7+3=2618 if the decimals were carried
out. Now as a proof to find the contents
of the bottom of the frustrum of a cove
add the area of the two ends and the
mean proportion between them together
x the length and divided by -3 will dive
the contents, viz: -15.878 x .7854
179.8084, 202 x .7854 = 314.16
mean proportion between them 249,4
66].2684 x I0.3
the perpendicular divided by 3 will give
2018 in the bottom piece. My learned
friend stated in that paragraph that the
cube root of 2000 will give the diameter of
the base of the top cut, but I consider if
he contemplates over it again he will find
that is erroneous and will find out that
the cube root of 4000. is more correct.
Excuse me for this long explanation, as I
know all the readers of the Timers admire
infellihiilty.
Yours most respectfully.
