You often ask me ques- ° tion aiut wrist watches, for sometimes the ads and sales pines `are confusing. So here's a gwde.. , Although in Canada we have no goVermment directives and the cOnsuxner must rely on the inte- grfty of the manufacturer and the dealer advertising, ethical sellers follow the U.S. Federal Trade COMMission 1968 directive that the terms "waterproof, shock- proof, nonmagnetic" should no Iter be used, on the grounds that no watch is "proof" against disaster. At the same time, stan- dtitds were.itrtroduced that have O. be met when water-resistant, Ck-resistant and antimagnetic unsare part of the sales pitch. It You aren't sure, remember to, ask questions. Here are some definitions: -Water-resistant: must be able to withstand water pressure corresponding to a depth of 33 feet for five minutes, and 115 feet far an additional five minutes. (In any event, get this type of watch checked annually) . —Shack -resistant.: must Withstand shocks that simulate a three-foot fall, either on the side or on the crystal. —Antimagnetic: treated to withstand magnetic fields set up by electrical appliances—refri- gerator, razor, radio, TV etc. (Watches should never be left on the top of radios, TVs etc.) —Jewels: a lot of fancy foot- Wotk goes on here. It is not neces- 8 to quote the number used (elteept for watches exported to the U.S. where it is a customs re- quirement) . In the past, some manufacturers bamboozled C1to'mers by using more jewels than were necessary. The mini- muin requirement is fifteen. Seventeen is more usual, but uorrtiplicated automatics and `enographs can require more. Cooked foods that have been frozen and thawed should not be' refrozen, for this could be dangerous. In any case, when' in doubt, throw out. Sales Talk Before buying goods or serv- ices, be realistic about. your needs, know current prices and determine the full selling price? Ask salesmen for identification (most provinces have itinerant sellers registered) . ASk for references and look into them. From then on it is up to you—no one can make you buy against your will. If you aren't interested, don't listen to the pitch. No need to be polite. Shut the door or hang up the phone. Inviting a salesman into the house shows you have some interest --and he knows this. But if you change your mind and he won't leave (hoping to wear you down), call the police: Food Tips —If you are saving calories, dust the top of the cake with icing sugar instead of making a frost- ing. —When a recipe calls for shredded cheese, a good rule of thumb is one half pound of grated cheddar yields about two cups. —Remember cracked or soiled eggs may contain harmful Crop Improve ent Nevis!
