Who started, the 11.1M4. that
young people today have lost, in-
terest in acquiring
and decorating their
'
choosing instead to live free of
possessions?
It's not really so, say; students
of the young -adult scene. ' Iihile
it's true that the young aren't
buying crystal' chandeliers -4f
they ever did—they have eimn ly
redefined what they mean by fur-
nishing a home.
But they're acquiring things,
,all right, and living happily -with
them, even if it's now called
"creating an environment."„
And in the process, a whole new
design look has developed, in-
volving lots of pattern cheerfully
mixed; a spare, uncluttered,
"underfurnished" comforts and a
front -and -center -stage spot for
hobbies and interests, • ineluding
music, handcrafts and art.
Pattern—in fabric and carpet—
is often popular with the newly -
settled -down young. They use it
both as a kind of art, and as a way
of disguising a sparseness of
other furnishings.
A case in point is carpeting of
"Antron" nylon, called Navajo,
in a vivid color scheme of terra
cotta, blue, brass and green, in a
young couple's living room.
Cut to large rug size, the carpet
is treated like a mural on the
floor. It acts as a dramatic focal
point for the conversation area
circling it, and makes a lively
contrast to the boldly patterned
chairs.
The stark, white stucco wall
provides an ideal backdrop for
the warm colors and pattern in-
teractions, giving a• cozy, lived-in

planned to • provide maximum
enjoyment. A leading window
manufacturer offers thesesug-
gestions for getting the best from
a patio:
Don't be - limited in patio
design. Square-shaped flagstone
patios are fine. But rectangular,
triangular, circular or free-
flowing patios of concrete, gravel
or bricks, may suit your homesite
better.
To assure year-round comfort
and enough leisure time for patio
enjoyment, use low -maintenance
patio doors which have insulating
glass (tempered forsafety) that
reduces heat loss and eliminates
the need for storm sash.
Consider using the patio to
expand more than one room. For
example, run it the length of the
house, or extend it round a cor-
ner. Then use gliding patio doors
to open each room to the outdoors
and provide access to a host of
backyard activities—al fresco
dining, sunbathing, entertaining,
or just relaxing.
11 the patio faces west or south,
shade can be provided by an awn-
ing—although this may darken
the interior and obstruct the
view. A popular alternative is
using gliding patio doors with
special glazing to reduce glare
and heat.
Provide the patio with
whatever extras will make it
more fun for the fathily. These
can range from a built-in bar-
becue pit and outdoor lighting to
comfortable, easy -care, weather -
resistant furniture. Outdoor
electrical outlets and some
covered storage space are also
handy.
With careful planning, the patio
yean be a year-round success. In
good weather, it allows you to
step right out into nature. In cold

Asphalt roofing shingles pro-
vide rustic charm and elegance,
and yet maintain their envied low
maintenance and fire-resistant
qualities.
That's the word from building
materials manufacturers where
even the styles and colors of as-
phalt roofing shingles are a signi-
ficant factor in the general design
and architectural styling of the
home.
Added to this new aesthetic
appeal in roofing is the well-
known, long time endurance and
safety record of asphalt roofing
shingles to wind and fire—a com-
bination hard to beat when it
comes to providing protection
and bold sweeping roof lines.
KEEP RECORD
Always keep a notation of the
brand name and specific color of
paints and stains. When touch-
ups are needed, the correct color
can be easily obtained.
RULERS RULE
Basic measuring devices
should include a 60 -inch tape
measure, a 72 -inch folding ruler,
a 36 -inch yardstick, and a 12 -inch
ruler.

A most reliable check for a kit-

work triangle.
Measure the distance from the
front edge of your sink to the
front of the range, the range to
the refrigerator, and the 're-
frigerator to the sink. This path
across the floor should not be less
than 4 feet nor more than 7 feet
with the exception of the path
from the refrigerator to the
range, which could be 8 or 9 feet.
