COOKING
WITH
THESTARS '#<`
By M. N,, Thaler
Aries is the first sign of the
Zodiac and rules the head. That
should give you a clue to the Aries
character.
The Aries is No. Land knows it.
Therefore, anyone born between
March 21 and April 20 has natural
talent and a built-in battling de-
termination to be first in every-
thing he does.
The Aries loves making pastry
and is often accused of being a
plain meat -and -potato type. But
this isnot entirely true. In fact,
the more sophisticated the Aries
gets, the more he revelsin the
exotic.
However, when cooking for the
family, the Aries will always be
slightly inclined to make casser-
oles and dishes which he himself
prefers. Selfish? Or just true to
form?
My favorite Aries says she
likes "everything good to eat."
And that's typical of the Aries
attitude. Her favorite recipe, she
tells me, is oatmeal refrigerator
rolls and that certainly corres-
ponds to her sign of the Zodiac.

'/z cup shortening
3 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon salt
'1/2,cup boiling water
1 cdp rolled. oats
1 cake yeast
1 cup lukewarm water
1 en
2 to 21 cups sifted flour
melted butter or margarine
1. Place the shortening, sugar
and salt into a mixing bowl, add
the boiling water; mix well.
2. Add the rolled oats and allow
the mixture to cool until luke-
warm.
3. Meanwhile, soften the yeast
in the 1 cup of lukewarm water.
4. Beat the egg well and add the
yeast mixture; mix thoroughly.
5, Add the yeast and egg mix-
ture to your rolled oats mixture;
stir in 1 cup of the sifted flour and
beat vigorously.
6. Now add the remaining flour
and mix well.
7. Grease the top of the dough
slightly with butter and cover
your bowl with a towel (and a
plate to hold everything down);
store in refrigerator until needed.
8. About two hours before it is
time to bake the rolls, take the
dough from the refrigerator; roll
it into a circle about Va inch thick.
9. Cut into 24 wedges and brush
with melted butter or margarine.
10. Roll up each wedge starting
with the wide side and rolling to-
ward the point.
11. Place the rolls on a greased
cookie sheet; make sure the point
of the wedge is on the underside.
Brush each roll with melted
butter or margarine.
12. Cover the cookie sheet and
let .the rolls rise until they are
double in bulk.
13. Bake for about 15 or 20 min-
utes in an oven that has ,been pre-
heated to 450 degrees P.
This makes about 24 small rolls
and I guarantee that your Aries
. will just love them.
Next week we'll talk about a
veal scallopini with which you
can serve the oatmeal rolls.

miles south of Sofia, is one of Bul-
garia's most popular tourist at-
tractions.
Built in its original form more
than 900 years ago and destroyed
by attackers a number of times,
it has always been rebuilt and
today is a national monurnent,
The monastery took its present
architectural form in The 19th

In addition to the buildings that
make up the monastery, tourists
are attracted by the murals,' icon

WITH ME
BY SALLY LESLIE
Hello! It's that time of the year
when, hopefully, eggs become
more plentiful. And goodness
knows we could use some help in
keeping the food dollar stretch-
'ing! And that reminds me, you.
have been asking why meringues
weep. Well, they do if you don't
cook them sufficiently. ,It takes
about 12 minutes at 350 degrees
F., or four minutes in a 425 de-
grees F. oven. The test is easy
insert a knife into the meringue
if the blade•:coinea out almost dry
with no' meringue adhering, th
it is cooked.
Meringues weep, too, if too
much sugar is used or if the egg
whites aren't beaten sufficiently
to dissolve the.sugar. And,
course, egg whites won't beat up
stiffly if any yolk or fat gets into
them or if the bowls or beaters
have an oily film.
Household Insects
At the end of winter some house
plants seem to get infested.
Uspally the unwelcome visitors
are aphids, scales and whiteflies.
These are certainly the most
common but are the easiest to
control. Which is fortunate.
Ifyou.buy new plants for house
or garden check that they are
free of insects because it doesn't
take long for the newcomers to
make themselves at home and
move from plant to plant. It is a
good idea to keep new plants in a
separate place until you are sure
they are pest -free. This is parti-
cularly important with African
violets. '
One of the simplest ways to
control insects is to use an
aerosol spray of insecticide. A
hardware or garden supply cen'
ter will have a selection of what is
now permitted for home use. To
spray a small plant: use a large
cardboard box to contain the
spray. Place the box on its side,
put the plant inside and then
spray into the carton.
Remember to store insecti-
cides in a cool, ventilated and
ocked place. Keep them out of
reach of children and pets.
What Makes A Light
Bulb Burn Out?
"My light bulbs are always
burning out ! " And I get mad
when 1 flip a switch and no light
appears. To find out more, I went
to talk with the Canadian Stand-
ards Association because they
ertify lamp bulbs.
Do certified bulbs burn out less
ften? Not really. When we buy a
bulb, we buy one with a specified
ated life, such as 750, 1,000, 2,500
hours and even higher. The rated
ife is the average life of a large
umber of similar lamp bulbs
ested under controlled
aboratory conditions. Even in
these conditions, light bulbs don't
11 burn out at the same time.
What affects their light life?
Many things—for example,
vibration, knocks when trans -
erring to a fixture, drops in the
warehouse. Operating at higher
oltage than that for which the
bulb was rated reduces the life.
If you want you can buy longer
ire lamp bulbs. But before
rushing off to buy this type con-
fider what you want from a light.
The purpose of a lamp bulb is not
ust to exist for a long time, it is
primarily to give light. To ob
extra life the bulb has to give
less light for the same moan
power. So throughout the life
long life bulb, we are getting

Should dry yeast be stored i
the refrigerator? No, but i
should be kept in a dry coo
place—not in a cupboard close
the range.
Should instant coffee be re
frigerated? Again, no. Instan
and freeze dry coffee should be
stored in a tightly closed con
tainer in a cool dry place. If you
refrigerate, chances are you'll
add unwanted moisture. How
ever, coffee beans and ground
coffee should be refrigerated' and
can also be freezer stored.
