From a small beginning of eight teams in 'B' classification in 1965 it has grown to 32 teams in 'AAA', 'A', 'B' and 'C' classifica- tions. It also has grown up and added some international fla- vour. When the tournament was four years old they added two 'A' teams for an exhibition series. The following year Detroit was here to take home the cup, only to be denied by St. Phillips of Toronto. However, in '70 and '71 Detroit were victorious but lost to Waterloo last year. Since the tournament expanded PAY pop COPF BS " Chicago, too, entered from across the border and this year that city has entered two teams in the 'AAA' series. 'Buffalo entered this year but when they learned they would be in playoffs at home they had to fall by the wayside. Water- loo will be back to defend their title this year. Oshawa and Welland are new to that ser es along with London, Detroit, o- ronto and the two Chicago t • In the 'A' series Orillia will re- turn ta• defend the trophy and Dunnville, who won last year's consolation, will be trying harder than ever to win the champion- ship round. Three new entries from Orangeville, Owen Sound and Whitby will add new spice to this group.. The 'IV series will see teams closer to our area. Meaford will be back in their black and gold colours to defend the original cup of the tournament. Gravenhurst will return to do better than the consolation championship won last year. However, Exeter and Acton are complete unknowns to this tournament. They have entered for the first time and might like to have some say about who is the top team. Kin- cardine and Petrolia are also tough to beat as Wingham fans have realized in the past. Nia- gara -on -the -Lake will be back flashing their green and white colours and making a name for themselves. The 'C' series will see local area competition as usual. Durham, always a rugged hockey town, will be defending the cham- pionship honors while Lucknow, last year's consolation winners, will be back to better themselves. Wiarton, the unknown and new team to the group, decided to come south along with Clinton moving in to Join the local melee which includes Forest, Watford, Lucan and Wingham. Lately the Wingham team of Danny Mont- gomery's has been peaking and should be at their high point for the tournament. Wingliam hasn't had their name inscribed on a trophy since 1969 and are hungry for that last stretch drive. They will be the team to watch for local sports. The tournament presents a long, busy week for the Wingham arena and the many people who so willingly give of their time and their rooms at home. Many boys are billeted at private homes and without such kind hospitality it would be most difficult to host the 600 people who engulf the arena that week. Along with the players and coaches there is always a good following of fans and parents on hand. Certainly the downtown area takes on a differ- ent air that week.
