What made:.; the 'great days'
great?. , It Might have .been 'the
competition; you .fought hard to
be !first' if you weite ' a `nev s-
paperman' and you' fought , hard-
est if you were on the staff of The
° Toronto Star. Mostly, though, it
was the .dedication` and drive of
these men that made the days,
and The Star, great.
" An hour-long special "Great
Days on ling Street", attempted
to show us some of the frazzle
dazzle' journalism that went into
the pages. of The Star and some of
the men that madeit great. These
were not *just reporters; these
were men looking. for adventure
and willing to risk their necks for
their job, And ,where, do you see

in it for the money; not, in those
days.But they, were giants, men
like Ernest Hemingway, Gregory •
Clark, Fred Griffin, yes, and
even Gordon Sinclair, the same
Gordon Sinclair who brags about ,
the money he has, the money he
earned, don't forget, from being a
great reporter, Sinclair's only
fault was that he spent too , nuch
time being bitter about the ,in-
' justices and 'hardship he ex-
perienced instead of trying to im-
prove •conditions. •
Yes, as Pierre Berton said in
narration, "Those were tli e
days!" Those were the days when
the newspaper . was all things to
all people, no TV to bring adven-
tures into your living room; they
had to be put on paper; . nothing
but the newspaper to take youto
the other side of the world. And
The. Toronto Star did it, though
many times not easily. Copy was.
delivered in every conceivable
way, by dog §led, airplane, spe-
cial train and model T, but it
made the deadlines:
Newspapers like that, and men
like those reporters,are part of
an era, and era that has been
pushed into the backgroundAjr
television. The CBC, in trying to

It was sad to hear of John Ban-
ner's death in Europe last week-
end. He

Schultz of "Hogan's Heroes", the
bumbling German officer of the
P.O.W. camp. He was 63 years of
age. -
All was not bad news in the en-
tertainment world, though. Jane
Fonda; the little gal with the big
mouth, finally divorced French
producer Roger Vadim and mar=
Add Tom Hayden, a man she met
when both were actively involved
in the anti -war movement. This
was a bit :of a surprise since many

that story next week! She is

Hollywood closed its ears and
awarded her the Oscar last year,

This weekend, Sunday, the
18th, at 9, Wayne and Shuster will
be back with their third of four
specials this season. They delve
into the world of organized crime
in their main sketch; also take a
look at the toy industry, Chinese
restaurants and inflatable furni-
ture. There is always soqmething
to make most of us.laugh\in one of
their hours.
In a special next Tuesday eve-
ning at 10, you can. see why you're
working yourself to death in the
hopes of spending your retire-
ment years in Hawaii. Hopes'
may be all you have! "That Won-
derful Day When I Reach 65"
takes a look at the Canada Pen-
sion Plan and private pension
plans that may or may not be ef-
fective. Sounds interesting...
and certainly affects most of us.
Stompin' Tom Connors
on Torn Hunter Show,
That miracle star of 'Canadian
show business, , Stompin' Tom
Connors, is special guest on CBC
tele sion's Tommy Hunter Show,
Fri y, Feb. 16 at 9 p.m.
y is he called miraculous?
first of all, it's a miracle , that
Torn Connors ever survived.
Born 'a fatherless son 36 years
ago, he never knew his mother
until he saw her many years later
on a St. John, N.B., street corner.
He drifted around, jobless most'
of the time, carrying his guitar,
wanting , to become a country
singer. He made it, with a nasal
twang and a knack for stomping
his foot in rhythm with his tunes.
He's worn out more than ' one
stage floor in his time.
Actually, his career began in
earnest at the Maple Leaf Hotel
in Timmins, Ont., where he sang
for the price of a beer, stayed 14
months ana wound up earning
$105 a week. Such is the incred-
ible 6 -foot 2 -inch Stompin' Tom
Connors, a man who has become
a sought-after star and a centen-
nial ambassador for his adopted
province, Prince Edward Island.
200 foot limit for ice fishing
Ice fishermen this year have
had some -of their mechanized
mobility restricted by new On-
tario fishing regulations.
Although still allowed two
lines, one more than summer -
season anglers, the. ice angler
must this season be within 200
feet of any line he is tending. He
must also have a clear and unob-
structed view of both lines.
Ther;urlationswere intro.
duuod to curtail • such activities as
tithing one line in I lake And
zooming away by snowmobile to
tend . another line a mile or so
away.
The unobstructed view legisla-
tion is to discourage anglers who
cut ice -fishing holes in the lake
near their cottage, set out tip -ups
and then retire inside to warmth
and comfort. With their snowmo-
bile at the ready, thdy glance out
the door every quarter-hour or so
to see if the flag is showing.
Tieing only a "minute away" by
snowmobile is no longer 'tending
your line wording • to the new
laws.
