Claim restraints
are obsolete
The dairy industry is handi-
capped by "just about as elabor-
ate a system of government re-
straints as human ingenuity can
devise," says William, A. Maas,
director of marketing for the
Royal Bank of Canada.
"It is to me a marvel that this
hardy industry meets its market-
ing challenges as well as it does."
Mr. Maas said the industry is
the victim of "outdated and obso-
lete beliefs among the people of
government, politicians and civil
servants alike, about the size and
influence of the farming popula-
tion of this province and this
country."
"The regulations about addi-
tives, for example, are so far bel
hind the times as to be, in the
view of an outsider, absurd.
There is nothing sacred about
raw milk or any other food.
"In nutritional values milk is
the almost perfect food, but let us
not forget the word 'almost.'
There is room for added value
and improvement."
Whelan favors
disaster insurance
An all -embracing insurance
program must be considered to
protect the producers of Cana-
da's food in the event of crop dis-
asters, says federal Agriculture
Minister Eugene Whelan.
Mr, Whelan, emphasizing his
sympathy—as a farmer him-
self—with the needs of the agri-
cultural industry, said such a
plan would eliminate the "politi-
cal manoeuvring that now
exists" when disastersstrike dif-
ferent areas of the country.
He referred specifically to the
Peace River area of British
Columbia and Alberta, where bad
weather late in 1972 resulted in an
almost total crop loss.
Emphasizing he would not be
all "easy mark" for every peti-
tion and request for help, he said
meetings with the agriculture
ministers of the two provinces
had convinced him help was
needed for the region. However,
there also have been crop prob-
lems in other areas of the country
on which no requests for help
have been received.
