Show Biz
I am convinced that I have
queer tastes! No matter what fad
oflashion hits the country, I usu-
ally decide I like it just as it's dis-
appearing; I'll tell you my„favor-
ite pop song and you'll probably
learn that it's number 499 on the
hit parade; and television, well,
the shows I think stink usually
end up being at the top of the rat-
ings. I just can't win!
Take, for instance, Yul B
'ner, which I wouldn't mind doing
one bit! I wouldhave sworn he
had it made with his new televi-
sion series, based on. "The King
and I". He played the role on
Broadway and won accolades; he
played it in the movies and won
an Oscar; it figured that the TV
series would have the same kind
of success. But our country, for
one, doesn't think so and they
have dropped him from the prime
Sunday at 7:30 spot.
I'm disappointed. The settings
and costuming were out of this
world; it was a real escape from
our sometimes humdrum exis-
tence. Brynner, to my way . of
thinking, could play Donald Duck
and de it magnificently; I think
he's one of the finest actors in the
By Vonni Lee
business. And Samantha Eggar
was a real charmer as Anna, the.
American -born school teacher
who went to Siam to teach the
King's. children. Supporting cast
included some of the darlingest
Oriental children you could ever
hope to see. I can't help but think
the CBC didn't really give' the
series a chance.
But wipe it out they did and are
replacing it with a horse, of all
'rigs; I sure hope Yul hasn't
heard! "The Adventures of Black
Beauty", based on the classic
children's story, has made its
debut and time will o tw tell how
successfully. It is a pletely-
English production, filmed en-
tirely on location in Hertford-
shire, outside London, on a large
country estate which includes a
200 -year-old farmhouse. Judi
Bowker, an 18 -year-old British
actress, plays the lead role of
Vicki Gordon and other roles are
taken by William Lucas, Char-
lotte Mitchell and Roderick
Shaw. The title role is taken by a
gorgeous seven-year-old U.S.-
bred racing horse really called
Black Jet. He is making his debut
as an 'actor'.
