schoolboy section of the Ontario
Curling Association. Winners of
the divisional championship Sat-
urday will play Hanover, winners
of Division -13-A' for the honor of
proceeding into the provincial
finals in Guelph next month:
Early in the week Coach Dave
HaVvkins had selected'three of his
four players, Bill : Sellers, Ron
McKague and Alan Grant. He
thought he might wait until as
late .as Friday'' to choose the
fourth°lmember of the team and

Curling °Club.
Dave was prompt to give credit
to the local, club for the way they
encourage the ` young curlers. It
does represent a loss of ice time
for the club members, • and con-
trasts with sothe other clubs in
the region: where less friendly
arrangements are in vogue. In
some cases the students have to
pay for their ice time, whereas it
is available gratis here.
"It would be impossible for us-
to
s-to function if it were not for the
unselfish attitude of the Wingham
club," Dave told The ' Advance -
Times. He pointed ,out that in
addition to the Wednesday and
Friday afternoon sessions, the
club has given up a complete Sat-
urday for the divisional play -
downs and a complete Wednes-
day for the Huron -Perth spiel
February 21. -
T its is Dave's fourth year as
mentor of the young rock tossers.
He describes the enrollment of 54
as the best ever, and the result of
steady growth over the past
several years. He has observed
that the student curlers are start-
ing younger than they did before,
and are therefore getting in more
action before leaving school: Ac-
tivity here started for the 1973
season about three weeks ago and
the late Wednesday and Friday
afternoons have seen enthusias-
ntic participation. As to duration
of ' activity, the. young athletes
will curl "as long as the ice lasts"
r". as they are not always able to
take advantage of the free rink
time, owing to heavy snowstorms
which might force them to head
home on 'the "big yellow fleet".
While refusing to get trio deeply
embroiled in a discussion of the
relative merits of girls as against
boys in curling, . Dave did de-
clare: "The , girls are good
ci riers." Pressed for a . direct

theywere ood as as g boys, but
the boys are younger: Pressed
further, he explained that l the
boys take eagerly to the game,
some of them in Grade 9, while
girls tend to wait a year or so.
Consequently ,girls are often sen-
ior in age to their teammates and
competitors. For the same rea-
son he sees no'tinge of romance in
the ° fact the participation splits
evenly' at 27 down the boy -girl
lines. That's just the way it work-
ed out, and that's it.
As a recognized extra -curricu-
lar activity at the school, curling
gives the 'participants not only
crests which they can wear with
'pride, but in some cases is taken
into account 'in assessments for
scholarships, or bursaries in
which judging is on an "all-
round" activity basis.
Dave admits there. is the odd
problem. For one, the young
curlers are provided with the
facilities and the stones by the
Wingham Curling Club, but
brooms are badly needed. this
year. Formerly they were pur-
chased out of athletic funds but
have been -removed from that
budget category. Currently an
appeal to the Student's Council
for 12 brooms is in the works, 'de-
cision as yet unknown. The tab
will be about $75 which could be a

In the closing moments of the
interview, Coach Dave Hawkins'
eyes got a glazed, far -away look
as he explained the advantages of
the game. (He's hooked—he ac-
tually believes sweeping has
some slight effect on the eventual

As he- walked away he was
looking off into space°and saying
something about curling being
the truly Canadian sport. .
Canadians get beat at the sup-
posedly Canadian game of
hockey, but Canadian curlers are
pretty tough to beat... sweeping
