Twelve members and , two
visitors answered the roll call,
"How can we bring price tags
down?"; it was suggested that
purchasers buy .medium-priced
articles.
Members planned to hold the
pot-lUcka:supper on the`'first Fri-
day. in November; the WI meet-
ing would ,follow on the second
Monday of the:month.. A motion
,*was passed that the secretary -
treasurer pay the fees as soon as
she receives the form. Mrs. Rus-
sell Gaunt was appointed an al-
ternate district director.
The first vice president of the
group, Mrs. George Fisher, pre-
sided for the meeting. The Insti-
tute Ode was sung and the Collect
repeated in unison.
The motto, "Small 'deeds done
are better than good deeds
planned", was°given by Mrs. Roy
McArthur. She stressed the im-
portance of doing good deeds, us
ing an•example of a place where
help is given to mothers of re-
tarded children.
Mrs. Johnston Conn gave read-
ings on the new year.
The topic, "Resolved to learn
more about why the high cost of
living", was given Mrs. Fred
Tiffin. "Today's consumer", she
said, "IS buying more con-
venience foods than ever before.
She expects to choose from a
wide variety of food processed
and packaged in many
canned, frozen, concentrated, de-
hydrated, heat -and -serve, ready-
to-eat.'Cost of transportation and
increasing variety of non-food
items available , in food markets
' alsa add to thy'. supermarket,
value.
Figures showed a 2.8 billion
dollar increase in the cost of
farm -produced food between 1961
-arid 1970. Sixty-four per cent of
this was spent on processing and
the remaining 36 per cent went to
the farmers:
At the close of the meeting all
were reminded of the treat for
Valentine boxes to be brought to
the February • meeting. Lunch
was then served by the, commit-
tee, Mrs. James Currie nd' Mrs.
George Fisher.

Mrs. Roy Dawson.
The sponsors, Mr. and Mrs.

WHITECHURCH —The United
Church Women held their Janu-
ary meeting on January 2nd at
p.m. at the home of Mrs. Fred
Tiffin. The meeting was prepared
by the president, Mrs. Millan
Moore, and vice president, Mrs.
Elwood Groskorth.
Mrs. Groskorth presided for
.the worship service and opened
with the poem, "Christmas",
which' included every month of
the year. The scripture was read
by Mrs. Elwood Groskorth, Mrs.
Garnet Farrier, Mrs. George
Thompson and Mrs. Russel
Chapman. Between each reading

Mrs. Moore closed the service
with prayer and presided for the
business.
A talk was given on India, pic-
tures were shown • from • the
January Observer and the work
of the missionaries at Anip Pital
Hospital in Nepal was told. Dr.
Helen - Huston is the United
Church missionary serving at
this hospital. A section was read
from the book, "New Horizons",
on Indian women. A lively dis-
cussion followed. Mrs. George
Thompson told of customs in
India.
The offering was received. The
roll call was answered by paying
of fees. The minutes were read by
Mrs. Dave Gibb and Mrs. Albert
Coultes gave the treasurer's re -
'port. Mrs. Moore thanked the
hostess and Karl de Koeijer
closed with prayer.

Dan Isabelle, Toronto, spent a
couple of days last week with
Clarence Clement and also
visited his mother, Mrs. Clement,
in Wingham and District Hospi-
tal. Mrs: Clement is improving.
Miss Ann Douglas returned to
Ottawa to resume her teaching
duties last week after spending
the holidays with her parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Les Douglas.
