came one of the best-known and
admired citizens of St. Cathar-
ines, J. Stanley .:Elliott, for 25
years a school pr ncipal there
and an avid supporter of sports of
.all kinds, died Christmas Day. He
would have beeit 80 on New
Year's Day.
TI a funeral was held Wednes-
day, December 27 from the But-
ler Funeral Home at St. Cathar-
ines to Victoria Lawn Cemetery
there. •
Born in Wingham, he began his
teaching career in Dundalk and
went to St. Catharines in 1918 as
principal of Victoria School. He
was transferred to old Central

A pioneer in vocational guid-
ance, he took courses in Canada
and the United States and in 1943
was appointed St. Catharines'
first vocational guidance direc-
tor, retiring in 1957. He was presi-
dent of the Ontario Men
Teachers' Federation for several
years and Was an honorary life
member of that organization.
To many he was equally well
known in sports. As well as
coaching at the public school
level, he coached and. managed
St. Catharines teams in hockey,
lacrosse, basketball; football, -
soccer, softball and track and
field and helped bring more than
30 provincial championships to
In 1$8 Mr. Elliott became the
second winner of the Ontario
Minor Hockey Association Honor
Award in recognition of his con-
tribution to hockey for more than
30 years.
.Mr. Elliott was also deeply in-
volved in civic affairs, was a
member of the old St. Catharines
Parks Board, a former director
of the St. Catharines YMCA and
for several years a member of
the Lions Club there. He was an
elder at First United Church, a
Sunday School teacher and for
more than a decade a leader of
that church's Bible class.
He is survived by his wife Ger-
trude; two daughters, Isabelle of
St. Catharines and Mrs. John
(Kaye) Ferol of Toronto; three
grandchildren and one great-
grandchild. One sister, Mrs. Rob-
ert -(Mary) Montgomery of Wing -
ham, also survives.

day, December 28, at the Wing -
ham and District Hospital on.his
67th birthday. He suffered a long
illness.
Born ' in New , Liskeard, . Mr.
Cleghorn came to this area as a
child. He attended SS No. 11,
Turnberry (Lower Wingham)
and was a truck driver for United
Co-operatives for many years. He
had been retired for some- time.
. A son of .the late Simpson Cleg-
horn and Bertha Holloway, Mr.
Cleghorn was a member of the
V�ingham United Church and a
former member of the Oddfel-
lows. n
He is survived by his wife, the
former` Clara Pardon of White -

ald Cleghorn also of Wingham.
Also surviving are two grandchil-
dren. He was predeceased by one
brother „Lyonal and one grand-
daughter, Kimberley Frances, in
1970.
The late Mr. Cleghorn rested at
the R. A. Currie and Son Funeral
Home until Sunday at 2 p.m.
when Aev. Robert H. Armstrong
condu ted service at 2 p.m: Inter-
ment was in Wingham Cemetery.

mon, Harold Davis, Ted Hollo-
way, Russel Baird, Murray Noble
