I found it to be a land of startling contrasts., peopled by stone -age men being thrust in one lifetime into the space age; a land of scat- tered tribes, many mutually hos- tile, many, still dominated by sor- cery, speaking over 700 lan- guages. Above all it is a land of incredible beauty... of awe-in- spiring mountains, plunging gor- ges and rushing rivers. Life ex- presses itself in a wealth of tropi- cal flowers, in gorgeous Birds of Paradise, in a riot of tropical vegetation and tangled rain for- ests. Exuberant scenery is on every hand, for throughout the Territory nature does nothing by halves. In Papua-New Guinea you'll see primitive man alive and colourful beyond belief. You'll see 10,000 years of human progress re-enacted before your eyes. You'll see a new nation actually being forged and you'll see scenic beauty on a wildly spectacular scale./ Let me first tell you of some of the towns we ,visited during our stay. Contrary to what I ex- pected, the major •town centres were bustling, thriving and grow- ing. Twentieth-century footholds in a primitive land, they boast modern buildings, wide tree -lined streets, colourful gardens, new cars and policemen on point duty. Briefcase - carrying indigenous Jpeople, smartly dressed western style, rub shoulders with primi- tive people straight from the vil+ lages. Port Moresby is the Territory capital and seat of administra- tion. This was our major point of entry to Papua-New Guin,ea. With a population of 33,000 it spreads along seven miles of undulating coastal country, has a magnifi- cent harbour and many points of interest you must see. These in- clude the House of Assembly, the Museum, Hanuabada Village, Koki Market, Bomana War Cemetery, Rouna Falls, the start of the Kokoda Trail, the new Uni- versity and the rubber planta- tions of Sogeri. We also visited the Town of Lae, a beautiful modern town which has been completely re- built after being devastated in World War II. Situated on. the Huron Gulf, Lae is a busy port with a population of nearly 17,500. In the heart of the town you'll find the magnificent War' Cemetery and the Botanical Gardens, where every known species of 1.1.'",..111•^w Our wish is that the New Year bring us global peace and brotherhood. STAINTON HARDWARE (WINGHAM LIMITED Territory native flora is grown in a Herbarium. One of the highlights of our trip was a visit to the beautiful tropi- cal township of Madang. Shaded by 'a superb avenue of trees, Madang serves as a port for the . Highlands. We took a short flight from here to Goroka and within half an hour were in the village of the Asaro Mudmen, who favour- ed us with a superb performance. Madang's striking harbour has dozens of small islands, inlets and lagoons. Hundreds of native canoes crisscross its clear waters. Here you can swim, sail, fish and take boat trips to little is- lands and picturesque water- ways. Ashore you can see native pottery -making and travel the scenic north coast road through coconut and cocoa" plantations. A trip to Bulolo and Wau are a must. Once the Territory's major goldmining centres, they now get their main wealth.from timber. A plymill factory in the heart of huge pine plantations can be visited near Bulolo. Some gold is still produced in the area, mainly by indigenous people, and their activities are photogenic in the extreme. The area is. rich in natural beauty, rugged, moun- tainous and thick with exotic flowers. The Papia-New Guinea High- lands are a world apart from the coastal areas . . . we found a world .of towering mountains, breathtaking ravines and a crisp, cooler climate. The people are varied, .flamboyant and colour- ful. Numbers have eagerly ac- cepted such Western . ideas as cash crops and road building, whil&others are among the most primitive people on earth. Several tribes 'are still turbulent and warlike. Living in their .iso- latekd valleys, they had previously never seen another human being apart from their own members, and believed they were the only humans- exisiing. Let me assure youw't s ifila 'hi i'ieffee df 'a.' lifetime, as this is authentic and true to life. . The Eastern Highlands centre on Goroka, a pretty town set in a valley 5,000 feet above sea level, surrounded by the.' 13,000 feet ramparts at. the Bismarck Ranges. We. drove our own _ car into the surrounding highlands, where superb panoramas unfold at every turn. Picturesque vil- lages, sparkling streams and tropical flowers greet you all along the roads. ' Native wool blanket weavers, coffee planta- tions and processing factories are other highlights. We were there when the annual show, held al- ternately at Goroka and Mt. Hagen was held. This is an un- equalled world-renowned spec tacle. Tens of thousands of primi- tive highlanders came to town, in wild traditional tribal dress. They sang, danced and paraded at the Show from morning to night in a spectacle unmatched in the world for colour and vitality. The main centre in the Western Highlands is Mt. Hagen, a colour- ful frontier town bustling with vigor and purpose. From here we visited some of the most exotic and fascinating areas in the South Pacific ... the Sepik River, the Baiyer River Bird of Para- dise Sanctuary, the Mt.
