ROSS MANN OF BLUEVALE and Mrs. Mann appreciate the services of Nurse Mrs. Sheila Lancaster of Wingham, who assists with Mr. Mann's post-operative care through the Huron County Home Care Service. Formerly with the Victorian Order of Nurses at Stratford, Mrs. Lancaster started with the Huron unit only recently and has also been em- ployed part-time at Wingham and District Hospital, Through the Home Care service Mr. Mann, a well-known TV personality, is enabled to remain at his home pending further sur- gery early in the new year. Mrs. Currie, mother of six, has4' plenty of homemaking experience, and passed a Conestoga College course in the subject last summer. .(Staff Photo) "Home Care" AvaikibIeto all Huron residents Restrictions by the Ontario government on hospital expendi- tures and operating budgets an- nounced as recently as last week have focused public attention on patient care at home, and the em- phasis is..now being placed on care of sick people in their homes inlieu of hospital care. The fact that the equivalent to hospital patient care can be had in a private residence is not as widely.known as it might be. Such a service has been available to all Hurout aty masideuts. for the past year under the administra- tion of the Huron County health Unit, financed by the Department of Health. Heading up the service from her office at 24 Centennial Drive in Seaforth-is Nursing Adminis- trator Mrs. Elizabeth Cardo, who co-ordinates the Home Care serv- ice for the county. -- Local Case A typical application of the home care service quite close to home is that of Mrs: John Pritch- ard of RR 1, Lucknow, who is convalescing from pneumonia at her home there, under the direc- tion of her personal physician, and with the aid of a homemaker provided by the. Home Care Pro- gram, plus the services of a physiotherapist from Wingham anti District Hospital. • Mr. and Mrs. Pritchard have a child just a little over a year -and - a -half old,' and prolonged hos- pital stay could.have-meant" con- siderable hardship and incon- venience in the home. As Mr. Cardno explains it: "By allowing patients to' re- main at home or leave hospital earlier, they can recover. or con- valesce in their own familiar sur- roundings ' where the patient is ofted more content. Admission to Home Care is arranggd by, the patient's fa ." ., .physi't aand any medical ' dii ' a be cared for, as long as adequate services are available to provide the care required. "Home Care is a rehabilitation program and patients sere ac- cepted with the expectation that they will achieve a position of independence' within 30.days. There is no age limit, but patients must be in need of a service, such as nursing or physiotherapy. If. one of these services is needed, other services such as homemak- ing, laboratory and x-ray, dress- ings and drugs pertaining tolhe patient's medical condition, can p evidded''. ria . ?+ r `l a ierlt arid thee' a gi is must be willing to participate in the Home Care Program. The Professional hmemakers training now available A meeting of Certified Visiting Homemakers was held at Cones- toga College recently, attended • by homemakers who have gradu- ated in the past year from the Certified Visiting homemakers courses at Conestoga College and co-ordinated' by the Manpower office in Goderich. In ,.attendance • also were students of the homemaking course now ' in progress at the college. The meeting was convened by Mrs.. Betty Cardno, administra- tor of the ,Huron County Home Care Program. Also in attend- ance was Mrs. Jan' Moore, nurse in charge of Victorian Order of Nurses in Huron County. • ' Discuss Roles Topics discussed were the role of the. homemaker when proiding homemaking for the Home Care Program, also their role in pro- vidingcare in relation to the nursing care of the patient. A report was presented on the Certified Visiting Homemakers conference held in Ottawa re- cently, which some of the mem-, bers had attended. • . Discussion was held on the role and qualifications of homemak- ers. The qualifications for be- coming a homemaker are—a mature person in good health and an interest in meeting and help- ing .people. . , The role of a homemaker is to provide personal care for the recipient plus whatever care of the home that is required to help the person to become indepen- dent again. The care of the home may in- clude—day to day household chores, such as vacuuming, dust- ing, washing, ironing and pre- paration of meals. Anyone interested in becom- ing a homemaker may contact the Manpower office in their area or the Huron' County Home Care Program for further information. A patient may receive a combination of these services, depending on the need. As presently set up, Home. Care is not for all types of patients. "As Home Care is at present an active rehabilitation program. with expectations of recovery within 30 days, there is still a need for help in providing ade- quate care for patients . with . a long -Standing condition,- such as arthritis or heart disease, so that they could receive enough care to stay at home. Wintertime seems to accent such troubles, possibly because dur skins are so much dryer. So give your throat a little sauna. treatment. Either hang your head over a bowl of steaming hot water, with a towel draped com- pletely over the whole head, or steam your throat with a towel wrung out of hot water—just as old time barbers used to do. Then lightly stroke in the richest sort of night cream. Thus creamed up, stretch out on some pillows on the floor and park your feet on a chair at about a 45 degree angle. Stay like that for fifteen minutes to push the blood up to your face and throat. It's known as the "fleauty Angle" and for years it has done a super job of stirring up sluggish circulation. When time's up,tissue off the cream, rinse with freshener and use a special astringent (pick the one color - ended on the label foryour special skin type) . This has firm- ing and toning qualities your throat needs. 45' Please accept our invitation to view our display of America's favor- ite handmade glass in a variety of colors, including Cranberry, Ruby, Or- ange, Amber, Green, Blue, Milk Glass and the original formula Carnival Glass. - PHONE 357-1434 WINGHAM AVOSMANTANOMIUMWMUMAttVXV USE OUR LAY -A -WAY PLAN FREE GIFT WRAPPING OPEN MONDAYS during December OPEN EVENINGS from DECEMBER 18 to 22 ome Furnishings
