Mayor Miller welcomes
newcomers to cundll
Satisfaction that there will be a
good council in office again, this
time for a two-year term in Wing -
ham, was expressed by Mayor
DeWitt Miller, who was returned
to that post by acclamation at the
expiry of nomination time Mon-
day evening.
Mayor Miller, who has been in
municipal politics for the past 22
years was mayor of the town in
1953 and 1954 and served several
years in council previous to that
time. He has been mayor for the
past seven years and is now look-
ing forward to two more. He has
;served on the PUC far most of his.
years in. public office and is a
veteran hospital board member.
Mayor Miller expressed a wel-
come to the newly acclaimed
councillors, one a veteran} of the
political field, Joe Kerr, who
comes back to serve as reeve. He
fills the vacancy left by Jack
Alexander's shift to Huron Coun-
ty Board of Education, repre-
senting Wingham and East Wa-
wanosh.
New Councillors
New to the board, but no
strangers are John Hayes and
Jack Gillespie. They will fill
vacancies left by the earlier
resignation of James Currie, now
part-time town supervisor, and
Councillor George- Carter, who
has stepped down after serving
as chairman of health and wel-
fare and fire committees.
Mayor Miller expressed the
view there would be good con,
tinuity of town business and fore-
saw no impediment to implemen-
tation of a five-year road con-
struction plan. He thought im-
provenent of town street lighting
would also be carried forward on
the basis ;of studies already
made. Last regular meeting of
• the old council will be December
4.
