MULCHERS POPULAR—
A 'mulching machine to chew
up top secret and confidential
papers for . Wingham Police De-
partment is on order at a cost of
about $300. Samples" of its work
look like what was once called
"excelsior" used. ' for packing
material for glass and other
breakables. • A much larger
machine is under consideration
for the works department, the
purpose being to chew up piles of
fallen leaves for easy disposal.
Council has asked Councillor
Bateson to get more information
and prices on the machinery, as
leaf burning will eventually be
halted in the growing drive on

Highways 86, 87
to be resurfaced
A couple of weeks ago E. C.
Beard of Wingham decided to
find out what the provincial gov-
ernment planned to do about the
poor condition of Highway 87
from Bluevale to Gorrie, so he
wrote the. Minister of Transporta-
tion and Conununications. Fol-
lowing is the reply he received
from Queen's Park:
Dear Mr, Beard:
I am replying to your letter of
October 22nd, concerning High-
way 87 between Bluevale and
Gorrie.
We have just advertised a con-
tract for the rehabilitation of the
section in question. You will prob-
ably be interested to know that
the adjacent section of Highway
86, between Wingham and County
Road 12 (Morrisbank Corner)
will be resurfaced under the.
same contract. Late fall and win-
ter weather is not conducive to
this type of construction, so I
would not expect the successful
contractor to start work in earn-
est on the project until next
spring. ;
The letter was signed by Gor-
don Carton, Q.C., Minister.

Doi pays price
for friendliness
In addition to losingeveral
chickens and a goose to a rabid
fox, Lynn Hunter, proprietor of
Sleepy Hollow rabbitry near
Whitechurch hadhad to .pose
of bis dog,
The dog came in contact with
the fox in the farm yard about
two weeks ago, and when tests of
the fox determined it had been
rabid,' officials of the health. -of
animals branch, Canada Agricul-
ture
garicu1-ture indicated the animal should
be disposed of or kept under strict
quarantine for six months. Under
the circumstances, . the quaran-
tine was not practical:
Wolf had been the farm watch-
dog for. the, past couple of years
and was.,good company and :very
friendly. Too friendly, as it ,turn-
ed out. Now Lynn is looking for a
successor, a . police dog type or
possibly a large collie type,
should anydne in the area have a
dog they 'wish to give a good
,home.
