the list.

A. correspondent says: -Since last
weeks issue, we have received a copy
ofilefr. Waters'bill to naake countieslia-
ble far all bridges in local municipali-
ties of I00 -feet span and upwards. If
this measure should become law the
already large county expenditure for
bridges will be largely increased. The
last auditors report of the oounty of
Middlesex being for 1887, shows an ex-
penditure in that year for bridges
of, in round numbers, $22,000, of this
amount the township ofBiddulph paid
about 51,600 or a sum stifficient to
build all the county bridges on Bel-
cluelph towline to the extent of their
interest therein twice over, Recent
decisions of' the courts in re-townline
bridges have been adverse to counties
so that the yearly expenditure for
county bridges under the present law
will be greatly increased, and if Mr.
Waters' bill should obtain, the rate-
payers of Biddulph may prepare them-
selves for a tax of about $2,000 a year
for county bridges alone and to receive
no benefit whatever or any equivalent
therefere. The ratepayers of Btddulph
should unite as one man and leave no
stone unturned to defeat a measure
which proposes to make them hewers
of wood and drawers of water for a
few rich and highly •favored muniei
palities.
At the last meeting of Tuckersinith
council they took up for consideration
the petition of G. E. Jach.-son and six-
ty-five others of the people of Egmond-
ville, asking that the village be set
apart as provided by section 17, Mu-
nicipal Act, lo enable the villagers to
raise funds to procure means of fire
protection. Mr. Jackson was heard
in favor of the scheme. He said the
exposed condition of the village had
been brought home to them by the
late fire at Mr. Colbert's, and also
what a few organized and well direct-
ed men could do in stopping or lain-
,dering the spread of a fire, even with
such appliances as were commonly
available. rhe villagers wish to be
set apart from the rest of the township
that a vpecial rate might be levied
upon the vinege property to be used
in securing appliances for tire protec
tion, and also teat the statute • labor
might be commuted at 75cts per day,
He was couiident the money resulting
from commutation would do much
more in improving the village than
the labor would. An examination of
section 17 resulted in raising doubts
in the minds of the promoters of the
scheme as to the leeality of a spemal
levy to secure appliances for fire pro-
tection other than for the construe
tion of waterworks, which of course the
villagers did not contemplate. The
matter was laid over for further dis-
GUMMI.
