NOT WASTING'A MINUTE were these hardy young swimmers who were the last to enjoy
Wingham District Centennial Swimming Pool late Mondayaffernoon. Chill breezes under
a partly cloudy sky kept the youngsters well immersed Most of the time as the summer
program officially came to an end and the pool was closed for another season. Attendance
was down considerably this year, owing to wet and cool weather. (Staff Photo)
Corunna Giants defeat Kings
The local Kings were elim-
inated in the O.B.A. playdowns,
going down to defeat to the tune
of 8-3 to the Corunna Giants in a
game played at the local diamond
on Sunday.
The Kings jumped into a one -
run lead in the bottom of the
second with Don Dennis crossing
the plate. However, Corunna
evened the count in the top of the
thi.cd with Bob Beaton picking up
the run. •
With one out and Ed Daer safe
on an . error, Wayne Brown
pounded out a single in the bot-
tom of the fourth to put runners
on first and second with one out.
Things at this point looked good,
for the Kings. Then things hap-
pened! Ed Daer was picked off
second for the second out and the
side was retired when Ken Saxton
grounded to third.
That pick -off at secondeemed
to be the turning point in the
game. TheCorunna Giants came
on strong and picked, up no less
than four runs in the top of the
fifth to jump into a 5 to 1 lead.
With a four -run lead Corunna's ,
fine ace, Greg Carter, came on
strong getting the next six King
batters in the fifth and sixth inn-

ings—all by the strike -out route,
Wingham threatened, in the.
eighth when they loaded the
bases, but lack of a good pinch
hitter resulted in the side being,
retired with the bases loaded.
Feeling the Kings coming on,
Corunna sent the top of their bat-
ting line-up to the plate in the
ninth and showed no mercy as
they pounded Wingham's pitcher,
Ed Daer, for a single and three
doubles They picked up three
runs before the Kings went to the
bull pen and youthful Bill Brown
came in to retire the side.
The Kings rallied in the ninth,
picking up two runs maki the
final score Corunna 8, Kings 3.
Tagging. The Bags— A good
turnout on hand to see this one,
and despite the score it was a
good game. Carter on the mound
certainly showed why .the Mont
real -Expos have been. having -sec–
ond looks at him. He pitched a
strong game, striking out 14 and
holding the Kings' bats *in check
as he gave up only three hits.
Carter also helped his own cause
with a single, two doubles and a
home run. ,
A former Winghamite lined up
with the Corunna team, Paul
Bell, played a good game for the
Giants at second. Ed Daer on the
mound- 'orAhe-K4ngs pitched a
strong game for four innings but
after he was picked off second in
the bottom of the fourth he
seemed to lack concentration on
the mound or was favoring a tir-
ing arm. He appeared to lose all
his usual zing and effectiveness.
The, umpires came up with a
bad game, if umpires are allowed
to have a bad game. A couple of
bad calls at the plate robbed the
Kings of a run or two and a mis-
interpretation of the ground rules
by the umpires robbed Giants
Greg Carter of., a hone run.
Kings' coach Charlie Ise, was
given the old heave-ho from the
game when he questioned the
umpire's decision. Yes, the um-
pires had a bad day!
