`Seven-year-itchback again
An international survey, re-
cently reported in the American
Medical Association Journal, in-
dicated that the age-old skin in-
fection, scabies, is on the rise
again. The study was conducted
by Dr. Milton Orkin of the Uni-
versity of Mil.,ltsota. To the
questionnaire ' he distributed
world-wide, responses were re-
ceived from a total of 159 derma-
. tologists, representing 35 coun-
tries in all.
Dr. Orkin states that Britain,
France, Poland, West Germany,
Italy, Portugal, the Soviet Union,.
Morocco, Argentina, Brazil and
Mexico appear to. have a "high
frequency" of scabies. In con-
trast, the condition (commonly
called "the itch" or "the seven-

year itch") is rare in Venezuela,
Uruguay, Hungary, Rumania,
Japan and Australia.
To date, Canada and the U.S.
have not been affected by epi-
demic proportions, howeyer, out-
breaks appear in many com-
munities and institutions. For in-
stance, a little mill town in Main
suffered an invasion not long ago,
with more than 200 cases at its
peak, mostly among school chil-
dren.
Scabies is caused by an itch
mite (Sarcoptes Scabiei) which
burrows under the host's skin.
The infection can 'be highly con-
tagious and is usually cyclical in
nature. During the early 1950's,
extensive investigations dis-
closed scabies to be "progres-
sively uncommon" in North
America, western Europe and
eastern Asia: But, since 1963-64, a
steady increase has been noted.
In reporting on Dr. Orkin's sca-
bies research, the New York
Tiines also cited findings of a
mid-August University of Wash-
ington medical. school confer-
ence: that scabies cases are up in
the states of California, Oregon
and Washington, as well as the
Vancouver area. Often, it's a
family infection, that begins with
one child. Certainly the outbreak
in. Maine crossed socio-economic
lines, not jibing with the tradi-
tional idea that the disease is pri-
marily a problem of the poor. Nor
does that area have any signifi-
cant number "of migratory work-
ers, who have been blamed else -
.where for bringing the mite with
them .
Usually scabies is foundbe-
.tween the fingers, on soles of feet
and wrists, on the palms, in the `
elbow crease and armpits, on the
buttocks and genitalia. It can af-

()PEN HOUSE
Friends and neighbors of Rev.
and Mrs. George W. Sach are
cordially invited to an "Open
House" in honor of their 40th

August 13th from 2-30 to 4:30 and

feet the faces of children but,
mysteriously, is seldom seen on
adult faces.
Dermatologists diagnose sca-
bies by opening the blind end of a
suspected burrow and removing
a mite for examination 'under a
hand lens. Only the female .mite
burrows in order to lay eggs un-
der the skin. When this happens,
a redness and itching develops
around the site. Itching is par-
ticularly intense at night and can
cause sleep loss. Scratching leads
to secondary bacterial infection
in the immediate location and,
possibly, to otherbody areas.
Scabies is contagious and can
spread with person-to-person
contact through. contaminated
clothes and bed linen.
Scabies is historically the first
disease of man for which the
cause was accurately deter-
mined, when the mite was identi-
fied in 1687: The New York Times
pointed out that the Romans were
said to fiavc4r ed thicirifection
by bathing in hot sulphur springs.
Today, it reports, sulphur oint-
ments are not nearly as effective
as a mild solution of Gamma
Benzene Hexachloride which is
available in Canada as Kwellada.
Most physicians prescribe Kwel-
lada in the treatment of scabies
or pediculosis.
Whenever you, have a job to do
that calls fora wrench,.take time
to look . it over and size i:t up, St..
. John Ambulance cautions. Can
you do it from -the floor? If so you
will need good footing. If it's near
the ceiling, don't try to do a
by lancing act .but use a scaffold if
necessary. Protect yourself from
electric ,wising and steam pipes.
