CARNIVEROUS PLANT -- BLADDERWORT
(Utricularia vulgaris)
. This aquatic plant is common in shallow marsh
areas, sometimes forming Targe mats of several
hundred plants. it has attractive yellow flowers,
borne on a 4 to 12 inch leafless stack above
water. The stems float beneath„ the surface and
consist of an intricate network of brSnches on
which are many', small bladders, each of which
has a tiny trap door opening 'inward but not out-
ward. Minute aquatic insects and other organisms'
that enter the bladders are trapped, decompose,
and particles are absorbed by the plant.
