RIINAWAY.--A serious and perhaps fatal
runaway accident occurred here Monday
forenoon. A fanner named F. Bartlett,
from near Arkuna, was driving along King
street when his team were frightened by a
train, and speedily became unmanageable
and ran away. At the Royal hotel they
took to the sidewalk, and ran over Mr, Geo
Phippen, who was unable to get out of the
way, injuring him so severely that he may
die. The team rushed up the sidewalk,
many pedestrians narrowly escaping, till
they reached South Main street, where
they became released from the sleigh and
turned south, again taking to the sidewalk.
Here tiaey crashed through a large glass
front completely demolishing it. The team
was stopped at the Tudor House and
found to be not much iftared. beyond one

glass. At last reports it10 Phippen was

A.NNIVEnSAnY SERVI-OZS.-The aforemen-
tioned services of the Thames Road Presby
teriau church, were held on Sunday and
Monday last. Sunday was a fine winter's
day and the numbers of people who availed
themselves of possibly the last opportunity
to hear the Rev. Dr. Cochrane, of Brant-
ford, thegyelleknown euthor, and eloquent
pulpit and platform orator, deliver two of
his characteristically grand and impressive
discourses, were unprecedeutally large. It
is a great pleasure to listen to the doctor :
hia thoughts are deep, his illustrations
pointed, subjective and convincing, arid his
language sublime, yet comprehensible to
the most unlettered. Both sermons were
very instructive. On Menday evening the
annual tea was served by tbe good Indies
of the church, in their usually pleasing and
august style, and despite the very sterile),
state orthe weather,' the 'benches around .
the heavily laden tables were well-filled
with happy looking participants, froui Eye
to seven o'clock. After tea the Rev. Dr.
Cochrane, as advertised, gave his !satire :
"glimpses of the old world," and succeeded
well in leading bis delighted excursionists,
raetaphysioally, to the different scenes; in-
cidents and attractions of the land across
the briuy deep. All who were, fortunately
present are pleased with the lecture. The
music On each occasion was furnished by a
special choir, the members of which did
credit to themselves and the churches to
which they belong The proceeds, all told,
arnouuted to $150, avhich is applied to the
Trust Fund, the congregation being free of
debt.

One of our townsmen has adopted a new
and I hope, original method of establishing
his reputation, and showing to the public
his good character. His plan is as follows:
He places in the Argus a letter under the
heading of ',What an Assessor must do to
please a go-ahead council." il) The gentle-
man in geestion is Mr. Poole, now ex-aasess
or of this town, a man well-known here-
about for his astuteness, especially in the
metier of omitting names from' the yoters'
list of 1888. (2) He, by his writing, in going
so far from the subject, shows to his read:
ers, if not to himself, his inability to do his
duty. His duty formerly was to assess this
town, but he failed to do it; and this is
what the new couneil objected to. Now if
he did the assessing as well as he is wont
to make the public' believe he did, his
article "what au assessor must do to
please a go-ahead 000061" es either sadly
astray, or it proves him to have been very
derelict in his duty, and decidedly unfit for
any such position. (3.) In reference to the
St Marys Carriage Manufacturing Co., Mr.
Poole, by his deep knowledge of all the in-
tricate -ways of that institution, would lead
one to believe, tnat be harl either been a
participant iu the game or had gleaned his
knowledge from hearsay. Now, it he took
part iu this scheme by baying a ticket he
must remember he was encouraging evil-
doing, and oonsegnently committed a crime
equal to that of the promoters of the
scheme. 13ut if he got his knowledge from
hearsay, he must also reratinaber that he
should make his assertiononly on such a
bait. (4th)Mr. Poole, by having his
character printed in pamphlet form, and
handed around among the farmers on Sat-
urday, proves inost conclusively that the
Argus it poorly circulated in the rural dis-
trict. (5) That Mr. Poole is a Coward and a
than uefit for the fellowehip of deeent men
is proven by the fact that he makes 'a per:
Bonet attack on 1-1, A. L, White, when he
at the same time knew that that gentleman
was unable to raise big head to write In
self-defenee. (6) In cionclusion, ellow nie
to say that Mr. Poole will he permitted to
go on his way, gatkering all the pleasure lie
