dessert items at the W.I. pot -luck supper Thursday night, so
Elizabeth Jacklin settles down to enjoy her allotment,
evidently happy to be with the group for the social event.

District president
guest for meeting
BELGRAVE — Mrs. Harold
Gaunt,, district president • of
Huron West Women's Institute,
was the special guest when the
Belgrave branch.held its regular
meeting last Tuesday afternoon
in the community centre. This
meeting helped to commemorate
the 75th anniversary of the fOund-
ing of the Institute.
Motto of the meeting, which
was convened by Mrs. Ivan
Wightman and Mrs. George
Walker, was "Friendship is the
only cement that will ever hold
the world together." Mrs. Gaunt
based her remarks on "Friend-
ship" and also brought the mem-
bers up to date on Women's In-
stitute doings. Mrs. Gaunt was
introduced by Mrs. Norman
Belgrave
Mr. and Mrs. James Irwin,
Douglas and Jim of Dunnville
• spent the weekend recently with
his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herson
Irwin and also visited with other
relatives..
•• Sunday visitors at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Robert. Higgins
were Mr. and Mrs. Roy Pattison
and Donald, East Wawanosh, Mr.
and, Mrs. Alvin Higgins and
Carol, Mr. and Mrs. Jack King,
Michael and Kathleen, Mr. and
Mrs. Jack Marks, all of Wingham
and Nr. and Mrs. David Penner
and -family' of •Listowel to cele-
brate Mr. Higgins' 85th birthday.
Joseph Smith of Warren, Mani-
toba and Lloyd Montgomery of
Wingham visited on Friday with
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Higgins.
Mrs. Stanley Cook visited with
her sister, Mrs.. Mary Vincent of
Blyth on Thursday.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hibberd,
attended the funeral of Mrs. Hib-
berd's cousin, Edgar Wahl of Lis-
towel on Sunday.
Jack Allan and Mrs. Thyra
Townsend of Mimico spent a few
days last week with Mr. and Mrs.
Albert' Vincent.
Mr. Alb t Vincent received
word on Mo a morning that
• her brother Ch ries All,an of
Windsor, had passed away
suddenly.

The roll call was answered by
each stating when she first be-
came interested in or joined the
Women's Institute. Mrs. George
Walker read a priem, "How to
Live".
Mrs. Ivan Wightman conducted
d quiz on facts about the founding
of the Institute, and Mrs. Norman
Coultes gave a short paper on the
• topic.
Mrs. Wightman also gave a re-
port on the anniversary celebra-
tion held at the Royal York in To-
ronto where Mrs. Olive Farqu-
harson of Essex, England, presi-
dent of the -Associated Country
Women of the World was guest
• speaker.
Mrs. Carl Procter was given
the honor of, cutting the birthday
cake and pictures were„taken of
ladies who have been associated
with 'the Institute for 30 years or
over. Everyone joined in singing
,the Women's Institute.carol and.
the anniversary song!
A short business • session was
-conducted by the president, Mrs.
• Norman Coultes. A delegate will
be sent to the officers' conference
in Guelph on May 3 and 4. The
annual meeting will be held in
March, also election of officers.
Members are requested to take
a visitor to the April meeting
,which will be a tour of the LiS-
towel Florist's at 8 p.m.
The property committee of the
W.I. Hall reported regarding
estimates for the installation of
the furnace and new kitchen and
were given authority to continue
with the project and to hire a con-
tractor for the job.' It is hoped to
have some volunteer help when
• this renovation gets ,underway.
Cake and ice cream were
served by the: lunch tommittee,
Mrs. Herson Irwin and Mrs.
Stantey Black and a social hour
was enjoyed.
Recently a man attempted to
make a local phone call, and aftet
several rings a recognizably, hu-
man voice said, "The number
.you have reached is not a worl$-
ing number. This supposed to
be a recording, but the machine
broke clown."
