Maple Leafs hold lead
in novice house league
Police Maple Leafs continue to
dominate the Novice House Lea-
gi a standings., having a 7 -point
lead -over the second place Cana -
diens.
In the game last Monday
between the Leafs and Brophy's
Bruins Mike Rintoul scored' early
in the first period on a. pass from
;.1 Jeff Jackson to give the Bruins
the
!evd•• until ♦w-sric McGregor
scored for the Leafs with five
minutes of playing time left, with
the result that the Bruins gained
only one point last week.
On Friday night, Canadiens
'showed too much strength for the
Bruins and scored six times with-
out retaliation. Scoring for Cana -
diens were Ken Hopper, Stephen
Nicholls and Craig Brydgest, two
each, and Randy Ritchie.
Last Tuesday night the CKNX
Hawks and Canadieps staged a
lkregular cliff-hanger with the
latter finally coming out 'winner
by 3-2 score. Canadiens had a 2-0
lead until the third period when
the Hawks' persistence enabled
them to tie the game.
The Hawks pulled out all stops
and came close to gaining the ad-
vantage but just failed to score,
then Canadiens picked up in the
remaining, two minutes and
scored. Craig Brydges and Ken
Hopper with two were the marks-
men for Canadiens and Kevin
Tervit ' and Vaughn; Passmore
connected for the Hawks.
Maple Leafs also dumped the

bantams ousted
by Kincardine
. Wingham Bantams. were ous-
ted from further playoffs by Kin-
cardine last week, losing 10-1 and
7-4. The first game was at Kin-
cardine and the second game was
played Sunday , night, re-
scheduled from Friday.
In the game Tuesday night at
Kincardine, John Henderson was
the only Wingham .player able to
score as the home team kept con-
trol of the puck for most of the
game.
The game here Sunday. was
.much better and at the end of the
second period was tied 3-3. Scor-
ing for Wingham were John Hen-
derson, Pete Hilbert and . Bob
Williams with assists going to
Randy MacKay, Rick Jacklin
and Paul Skiri'n.
Kincardine roared back early
in the third with two goals fol-
lowed by one by John Hend-
erson which was answered by two
more by Kincardine.
Win trophies
in Belmore spiel
BELMORE — A very suc-
cessful bonspiel was held here on
Wednesday with a full entry of 20
, rinks. Winner of the 9 o'clock
draw was a rink front Brussels
skipped by Ron Adams with 3
wins plus 11, winning the Wm.
Elliott trophy. - - .
Winner ofthe 11 o'clock draw
was a. Ripley rink skippedby Don
McTaMish with 3 wins plus 13;
winning' the Renwick trophy.
The ladies of the district served
meals throughout the day which,
were enjoyed by all: •
Rinks attended from Formosa,
Mildmay, Fordwich, Wroxeter,
Wingham, Ripley, Teeswater,
Brussels, .and Chesley.

heap after last weeks session of
bowling in the bantam section
under the banner of the . Youth
Bowling Council at the Wingham

They lead with 52 points, fol-
lowed by Spaniels 45, Beagles 44,
Terriers 40, Huskies 41 , and
Dachshunds 34 points.
George Thomas came through
with a single of 181 and double of
325 to take the honors as top bowl-
er for the. boys,
Sheldon Jones with 157, Brenda
Foxton 154, and Paul Cerson with
151 led14 4, vit games over
150 and -Sheldon Jones logged 277
to lead .Brent Foxton 271', Paul
Cerson ,265, Robbie Grove .238,
Elizabeth Wehrneyer 236, Cheryl
Hubbard and. Robert Wharton,
each with 232, and Corinne Nes-
bitt 230 in the over 225 class.
In the Junior Division, Chicka-
dees have 55 points,' Sparrows 45,
Woodpeckers 43, ; Canaries 41.
Robins 39 and Bluejays 32.
Peggy Tervit scored 181 and 324
for, the high single and high
double, and Rick Nesbitt led the
boys with 245 and 408. Jamie
Smith with 209 and Kevin Hickey
with 200 were the best of the over
175 group. Ricky Nesbitt won his.
100 pins over crest.
' Several howlers came up with
very good .doubles with Kevin
Hickey toppling the pins for a 351,
Jay MacLaurin 328, Jamie Smith
309, Ricky MacLennan 296, Jamie.
Strong 290, Stephen Burke and
Joan Cerson with 271 and Monty
Norman with 260.
The team standings in the sen-
ior
enior group is a little closer with
Dynamites leading with 51 points,
Dumptrucks 50. Slackers 45,
Wingham Midgets
out of playoffs
Wingham Midgets and Listowel
met in a best of th; ee playoff.
series last week, with the latter
proving too good by winning at
Listowel Tuesday 7-6 and coming
to Wingham Sunday night to win
13-3.
Bob Johnston took a pass from
Gerald Skinn ,in the first minute
of play in Sunday's game to give
Wingham an early but very short-.
lived lead, being held scoreless
afterwards until 5.37. of the third
period when Murray Black
scored.
Midway through the first per-
iod with Listowel ahead 5-1, the
Wingham players dropped all at-
tempts to set up passing plays,
making.. individual sorties which
proved completely ineffective.
. As play progressed, efforts to
play the puck decreased and the
main thought seemed to be to trip

players, giving the referees a
busy night doling out 19 penalties
to Wingham and 24 to Listowel
who were not hesitant in retaliat-
ing. Score at the end of the second
period was 8-2 in favor of Listo-
wel .
Murray Black with Rick Fox -
ton 'assisting scored. Wingham's
third goal at 13.06 of the third per-
iod and final score was Listowel
13 and Wingham 3.
Skidders and Superstars each
with 34 and the Gunkies hold up
the rest of the teams with 26
points.
For the • girls, Sandra Lee had
172 for the high single and Lois
McLaughlin 317 to take the high
double title for the week. David
Walker ,scored 246 and -439 to top
the boys. -
Paul Bennett 'scored 226 in the
singles over 200 and also led in
the doubles over 325 with a good
score of 402. Larry Simmons had
373, Rick Wall 372, Lee Grove 335
to complete this group..

Further competitions in the
h-- Four Steps to Stardom zone
tournament will be held at bowl-
ing alleys at Wingham, Walker-
ton and Clinton this Saturday and
Sunday. -
The Bantam division will bowl
at Walkerton Saturday. afternoon,
the 'Juniors. at Clinton Sunday
afternoon and the Seniors will pit
their skill against each other at
Wingham Sunday night.
Wingham will be represented
by 26 bowlers who have qualified
to compete in the second stage of
the zone playoffs. Winners ad -
Vance to the provincial playoffs
at Kitchener to compete for the
honor of entering the national and
complete the Four Steps to Star-
dom.

Orange euchre
• Winners of prizes at the euchre
held at the Orange Hall January
31 were Mrs. A. Nethery and Mrs.
Leonard James who qualified for
the ladies' high and low scores
respectively.'
John Doig captured the men's
high and George Grigg received
the men's low prize. Mrs. ,G.
Johnston and Mrs. H. Wheeler
were winners of draws and Mrs.
M. Foxton won the luckyy, chair
prize.

Wingham PeeWees and Ban-
tams will play host to two hockey
teams from Mississauga on Sun-
day with the PeeWees playing al
4:30 p.m. and the Bantam game
following at 6:30 p.m.

up as. they .gained 5 points and

Pat Fryfogle took the ladies'

The 200 games were not as
plentiful as previous weeks but it
proves some of us are stili trying.

Monday and bowlect some nice
scores.

runner-up ..was Mrs.. Emily
Williams with a 199: For the high.
double it Was just reversed. Mrs.
Williams' score was 343 and 'Mrs.
Edwards' 341 was -runner-up.
Another to have good scores
was Mrs. • Mabel Cruickshank
with a 164 single and 294 double.

"It was Lyla Hickey all the way
for the Legion Ladies; she rolled
a 231 high single and a 538 high
triple. Runner-up for the s',ngle
was Jean Tervit's 199 and Helen
('asetnore had a 526 triple to
make her second in that division.
Tie Coffee Crisps have a nice
comfortable lead; a mere 73
points. They are followed and not
too closely. by the -Snack Bars
who have 52; the Smarties 37 and
the Sweet :Maries 34.

Theme of this year's show is
taken from "Alice in Wonder-
land" and "Oliver". Among those
in feature roles are Joanne Wood,
