A Winghanf<NSinessxnan for 44
years, Robert Alexander Spotton
died ii&the Wtngha)n and District
Hospital -on Saturday, January 8,
following a lengthy illness. He
was in his 91st year.
Mr.- Spotton was bo,rn and edu-
cated in Howick Township, a son
of the late Arthur Spotton and
Sarah Jane Johnson. During his
earlier life he farmed, then con-
ducted a memorial business on
Wingham's •Joephine Street
where John Malick now operates
a similar business. Mr. Spotton
retired about' six years ago and
aefore entering hospital resided
at the Callander Nursing Home in
Brussels.
He was a member of the United
Church, the Wingiiiam Masonic
Lodge A.F.&A.M. No. 286 and the
Wingham IAL_.
Mr. Spetton was the last sur-
viving member of a family of six.
He is 'survived by his wife, the
former Milissa Hicks whom he
married in Gorrie .in September
1907. Also surviving .are nieces
and nephews.
The body rested at the S. J.
Walker Funeral Home in Wing -
ham until Monday at 2 p.m. when
funeral•service was conducted by
Rev. Barry Passmore of Wing -
ham and Rev. Eric LeDrew of
Brussels. Interment was in the
Gorrie Cemetery.
Pallbearers were John Malick,
George Brooks, Earl Jenkins, -Art
Wilson, Bill Johnson and .Alvin
Moffat. Floral tributes were car-
ried by Stewart Strong, Everett
Pennington and Roy Pennington.

dies i n Exeter
Funeral service was held nn
Friday at 2;30 al. the Hopper
Hockey Funeral ome, Exeter,
for Melbourne (Mel) Keating of
Exeter who died last Wednesday
at the South -Huron Hospital in
that town. Rev. George Anderson
officated and interment followed
in the Exeter Cemetery.
Mr. Keating pas 60 years of
age and death followed a six -
merit -hp illness. Born in East Wa-
wannsh Township, he was a son of
the late Charles Keating and the
former Annie Edwards. He at-
tended Westfield Public School
and served during World War II
with the RCAF.
For many years he was a resi-
dent of Wingham where he was
employed by the Public. Utilities
Commission. He also worked at
radio station CKNX for a year.
Fifteen years ago the Keatings
moved to. Exeter, where he was
employed for ten years by the
PUC in that town. Before he took
i11 six`tnonths ago he operated the
pumping station at Grand Bend
under the direction of the Ontario
Water Reources Commission.
1 -ie- was a member of Trivit
Memorial Anglican Church in
Exeter.,
Surviving are his wife, the
former Viletta Chamney of East
Wawanosh whom. he married in
the early 1940s; two sons,•Charles
of London • and David at home,
and one grandson Robbie.
Also surviving are one sister,
Mrs. Stanley (Hazel) Snell of
London and two brothers, Nor-
maln of Wingham and Harold of
the 5th line of Morris.

Mrs. Wm. Brown
dies in Lucknow
The death occurred in Pine -
crest Manor Nursing Home,
Lucknow, on Sunday of Mrs. Wil-
liam Brown of- Lucknow. Mrs.
Brown was. in her 80th year and
death followed a lengthy illness.
Born in Huron Township, she
was the former Ethel Bell, a
daughter of the late William Bell
and the former Caroline Bradley.
Fifty-three years ago she was
married to William J. Brown who
survives. Also surviving are two
daughters, Mrs. Clark (Ardyss)
Johnston of- East Wawanosh and
Mrs. Gertrude Tiffin of Wing -
ham ; two grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren. She was
predeceased by one brother,
Lloyd Bell.
The body rested at the Mac-
Kenzie Funeral Home in Luck -
now where funeral service was
conducted yesterday (Wednes-
day) at 2 p.m. by Rev. Glenn
Noble of Lucknow Presbyterian
Church.
Temporary entombment fol-
lowed in the . Wingham Mauso-
leurri with spring burial in the
Wingham Cemetery.
THOMAS C. SMELL
Thomas C. Shiell died at his
home in Mornington Township,
RR 1, Newton, at the age of 67.
Born at Wingham, he was the
son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Rob-
ert Shiell. He came to ' Elma
Township with his parents and
farmed in Elma until moving to
Mornington 28 years ago. He was
a member of North Mornington
Presbyterian Church.
He married the former Ruth
Ann Engler October 18, 1933.
Surviving besides his wife are
two sons, James of Stratford and
Lloyd of Rostock; four daugh-
ters, Mrs. Paul (Lois) Graham of
Shakespeare, Jean of Kitchener,
Connie and Terri at home; one
sister, Mrs. Joseph (Mary). Hol-
mes of Brussels; three brothers,
George of Welland, Harold of
Bridgeport and Alvin of RR 2, At-
wood. Also surviving are four
grandchildren.
Funeral services were held
from Peebles Funeral Home, At-
wood, Monday, January 10 at 2
p.m. Rev. Robert Cochrane of
North Mornington Presbyterian
Church officiated.
Interment followed in Elma
Centre Cemetery.

unit meeting -
BELGRAVE - The January
meeting of the evening unit of the
UCW was held at the home of
Mrs. Harold Vincent with 17
present. .
Minutes of the last meeting`
were read and several items of
business discussed. The general
meeting wall be held January 27.
Offering was received and dedi-
cated by Mrs. Harold Vincent.
Mrs. William Coultes opened
the worship with a poem, "A New
Year". "Standing at the Portal"
was sung. A story, "What Is the
New Year?" was read by Mrs.
William Coultes. Prayer was
offered by Mrs. Murray Vincent
to close the worship service.
.. Mrs. Ross Anderson conducted
the program on Zambia, a
country in Africa. She was
assisted with readings by Mrs.
Laura Johnston; Mrs. George
Michie, and Mrs. Cliff Logan.
The next meeting will be held
at Mrs. George Johnston's with
Mrs. Cliff Logan's group in
charge of the program, Mrs.
William. Coulter, the lunch and
Mrs.- Ross Anderson's group, the
worship. Lunch w -az served by
'Mrs. Cliff Logan's group.

Erle A. Corbett formerly of
FOrdwich and Woodstock, died
Sunday, Jan. 9 at the Byron Chest
Diseased Unit, Byron, in his 74th
year. ,
He, was predeceased hy� his
wife, the former Nellie Blyth Mc-
Kpe Surviving are one -son, Mac
Corbett and one daughter, Mrs.
John (Jean) Winegardenv both of
London and sisters, Mrs. Russell
(Orme) Pollock, London and
Miss Mary Corbett, Toronto;
three grandchildren, Wayne,
Winegarden and Brenda Corbett,
London and James Corbett of
Toronto. '
The funeral service was held
Tuesday, Jan. 11 at 11 a.m. from
the M. C. (Mac) Smith Funeral
Home, 69 Wellington St. N.,
Woodstock with Canon L. W.
Owen of New St. Paul's Anglican
Church officiating. • Committal
service and temporary entomb-
ment followed in the mausoleum
at Gerrie on Tuesday at three
o'cloek with interment later in
FOrdwich Cemetery.
Lucknow area
-woman i dies
in 85th year
A lifelong resident of the Luck -
now area, Mrs. Dan Wylds of RR
3, Lucknow, died Saturday at the
Wingham aqd District Hospital
following- a lengthy illness. She
was 84. -
Mrs. Wylds' was the former
Ethel Taylor and was born in
Ashfield Township. Her parents
were the late David Taylor and
Frances Johnson.
Surviving are her husband, to
whom she was married more
than fifty years; one daughter,
Miss Doris Wylds; • two sons,
Lloyd of Ripley and Warren of
Ashfield Township; seven grand-
children and three great-grand-
children.
Also survi'• ' is one . sister,
Mrs. Robert (Belle), Wagner of
Detroit. She was ,iredeceased by
several brothers and sisters.
Mrs. Wylds rested at the Mac-
Kenzie Funeral Home in Luck -
now where service was con-
ducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. by Rev.
Kenneth Rooney of Ripley and
Ashfi 1d Presbyterian- Churches

Worship theme is
from study book
FORDWICH — The general
meeting of the United Church
Women was held last Thursday in
the Sunday School rooms. The
worship service, taken by Mrs.
George Ashton, Miss Violet Bes-
wetherick and Miss Minnie ,Mc-
Elwain, was on the theme, "What
makes a New Year?" The wor-
ship centre followed the theme of
the new study book with an open
Bible, lighted candles and Afri-
can carved figures. "
