BY ANDY DOIG, LINDA MARTIN - AND LINDA IANGENDOEN It finally happened! Howick defeated Minto to win the Inter - School Flag Football champion- ship. The game . was played at Minto on November 24th. Min- to had won the trophy four years before. • In the first quarter Howick received its biggest break. Ron Kaufman made a quick kick. The kick was short but Doug Inglis recovered the ball, and scampered to the Minto 15 -yd. line. On two plays Howick ad- vanced to the '7 -yd. line. .In- stead of trying for the 2 yards, Brian Hoist •licked on a first - down, giving Howick a single point. This was the deciding point throughout the game, un- til the last play, when T o m fillings intercepted a Mint o Midgets .win 8-3 over Lucknow BY OWEN CURTIS The Wingham Midgets have done it again! Last Friday night the boys defeated their oppon- ents, ppon ents, Lucknow, with a score of . 8-3. in the first period Wingham scored three times, these goals being the only three of that period. . At 5:35 Gary Meyer began the action assisted by Hilbert. O'Krafkaa and McPher- son each registered singles, as- sisted by Millen and Mowbray respectively. The second period opened with Wingham scoring twice, with just minutes in between. The first goal was scored by Hilbert assisted by Sangster and o'Krafka. The second point was made by Mowbray and ,that goal was unassisted. In less than a minute .to play. Luck - now scored. breaking the hopes of a shutout for MacKenzie. During the third period all scores were close. Lucknow opened the period with their second goal of the evening. Wingham *scored twice and made the score 7-2. The goals were scored by Hilbert and Millen, both unassisted. Lucknow scored their last goal of the game at the 15:00 minute mar:. Gibson fors Wing - ham scored the final goal. Curlers' euchre BELGRAVEr-The Country Curlers held a euchre and or- ganization sleeting last Tues- day evening in the community Looms. The winners of the euchre were: High woman, Ras Turvey (playing as a wornan);'low wo- man, Mn. Lloyd Chappel; high man, Vern Hugter: low man; John R. Taylor; lucky draw, Gordon Gibson. pass, running 40 yards to give Howick a touchdpwn. The con- vert was not attempted. During the game neither team could move the ball of- fensively because the snow-cov- ered field became muddy and slippery, especially in, middle field. Both teams were bril- liant defensively. At the end of the game,, Mr. Dean, physical ed- ucation teacher at Minto,, pre- sented the trophy to Andy Doig, Ron Kaufman and Tom fillings, . captains ofHowick. The• trophy was donated by the Harriston Home and School Association. Mr. Livermore, the coach of Howick, com- mented at the end of the game: "We were small but mighty. Desire indeed is important and the .boys from fIowick certain- ly had the desire to win the I game. This year Howick has had its most successful year since entering the league. Madill Secondary School in Wingham, Sacred Heart Public School defeated Howick Central In the championship game to win the first Public School Vol- leyball trophy at the volleyball toumament held here. The first game Howick play- ed against East Wawanosh, How- Ick winning 15-5. They had a five minute break, then playing east Wawanosh for the second time in the two out of three series. This score was 15-1 in favour of Howick. The winner of another game played Howick, which happen- ed to be Wingham Public School, Howick also defeated them in the first game 15-4. The sec- ond game was as geed as the Iltit. The score then was 15-6 for Howick. After estopping for lunch the boys played Ripley, winning 15- 8. The second game was won by Howick with the score 15-8 also. • For the championship ganrie Howick played Sacred Heart. Thelatter defeated Howick in the first game 17-15 ina thrill- ing contest. Sacred Heart was defeated in the second game by the score 15-6. The finial game was a thriller and packed full of ex- citement as the lead changed hands several times, but -finally Sacred Heart won by a score of 15-12. .Howick played very strong games throughout the entire tournament.. Adding to the ex- citement of the1tournament were cheer ders=rfrom the/var.-4 ious schools. The boys from Howick Central School were certainly inspired by the enthus- iastic cheers of .the girls in their colourful green and gold uni- forms.
