Fabric industry leads laundry equipment design
Washing, of clothes is a pro-
cess established before the dawn
of recorded history. Drying
was taken care of by nature.
From trans era of relatively prim-
itive methods of scrubbing the
family wearing apparel has
evolved the highly sophisticat-
ed automatic laundry appliances
of today.
And,, strange as it may seem,
these ultra -modem laundering

part, developed and designed
by the fabric industry. F e w
other appliances have been af-
fected to this degree by devel-
opments in a completely unre-
lated industry.
For example, about 50 per
cent of all textiles and wearing
apparel now on the market are
made of synthetic fibres. Pre-
dictions indicate this trend will
increase to 60-70 per cent with,
in the next few years. Because ,.
of society's desire for easy -care
garments, most of these fabrics
will be water -washable.
In keeping with these fabric
characteristic changes, appli-
ance technology has stressed
not only special cycles for cer-
tain fabrics, but also economy,
convenience, flexibility, as
well as capacity, durability,
and 'consumer designed' war-
ranties.
There are several reasons for
having an automatic washer and
electric dryer in the home.
*An automatic washer takes
the guesswork and drudgery out
of washday. With a single set-
ting of the controls the machine
will fill, wash, drain, rinse,
and damp -dry clothes --auto -
matically. It's like feeding in-
formation into a computer then
• tetting it take over.
*An automatic washer saves
the housewife time and energy,,
Once the controls have been sed
there's no need to even rement
ber it's washday.

water and saves time and work.
*An automatic electric dryer, .
makes every day the right day
for drying, There's no. more
watching and waiting for the
sun to come out.
*Ironing time is reduced to a
minimum through fluffing fab-
ries to ensure they come out a
natural shape. Clothesline W
creases and clothes pin marks
are banished, which also re-
duces the need - for pressing.
* An automatic electric dryer
maintains the effectiveness and
original contours of permanent
press garments through an auto-
matic cool down action to keep
surfaces smooth and wrinkle -
free.
*An automatic electric dryer
ensures that clean clothes stay
clean. Clothes hung outside,
or even in the home, can be-
come soiled by .dust and impuri-
ties in the air.

Sweatery is the word for fall

Sweaters have grown so that

It's a tunic if worn over pants

When itcomes to coveting

Fashion's preoccupation with
knitted effects makes it a big
season for men's wear argyles,
hosiery plaids, cables and rib-
bery of all kinds. But modern
knitting technology has also
mastered printed effects such
as the Art Deco motifs of the
current 20s revival. These are
much in evidence in j acquatd
knit tunics ands sweatercoats of
acrylic fibre.

on Friday, November 21; 1969,
in Wingham United Chureh by
Mrs. Sam Thompson w the

This over-under approach '
has given birth to "underwear"
sweaters that are soft and clingy
with ribbing like a man's under-
shirt. In underwear ivory, the
sweaters are simply styled with
muscle sleeves, crew neck and
smokey buttons on the tab front
and pocket. And they're for
showing under long, deep V
vests.

Pants are a good '50 per cent '•
of the fall picture. Flare bot.
toms still predominate, although
straighter and narrower legs are
returning. Skirts come in for
less attention. But they are still
very much with it in motor-
cycle or kiltie wraps peeping
out from under long, long Jack-
ets or orbiting in full circles
above the knee.
Tops are usually long with
some hip interest such as big,
flat pockets or they're stretched
out at the waist with a deep
band of ribbing. Many tunics
have cutaway tank tops that
help make the switch from casu-
al to dressy, with the addition
or deletion of shirts, sweaters,
scarves and beads.
PERFECTLY PROPORTIONED
PANTSUIT in new wine,
consists of a sweater -tunic
long enough to wear as ,a
mini, stretched over sweater -
pants. Pockets _large and flat
give slight emphasis to the
hips. Ribbed V-neck laps over
surplice style.
Colors are rich but subdued.
Mostly, 'the' eniphasis is on dark
tones and those that imitate
menswear: earthy shades,
navy, berry red, forest green,
burgundy, camel, grey and the
vegetable colors, like eggplant
and spinatch.
