The National Film Board of
Canada has awarded top honors
to the best Canadian films of
the past year. Some films from
Quebec and Western Canada
were not familiar to us, but
many of the winners were To-
ronto or Ottawa -produced and
seen by the entire CBC -TV net-
work.
The Film of the Year award
was presented to "The Best ..
Damn Fiddler from Calaboogie
to Kaladar", a feature film
which starred Kate Reid and was
seen on last season's "Festival"
series. It also recei•.'ed eight
other awards, one of there go-
ing to Peter Pearson for his dir-
ecting, another to actor Chris
Wiggins who co-starred with
Miss Reid.
Best actress was Jackie Bur-
roughs for her performance in
"Dulcima" seen only a few
weeks ago, on the CBC. Ruth
Springford, long a fine Canadi-
an actress, was named for her
supporting role in the 'Corwin'
episode of "Does Anybody Here
Know Denny?" seen on the Sun -

day evening series at the be-
ginning
of this season. Two
special awards were presented- -
Margot Kidder, star of 'Denny',
was named an outstanding new
talent and Andrew Alien, a To-
ronto radio broadcaster, re -
ceived the John Dr&inie Award
for distinguished service in
broadcasting. The award is in 't
memory of the late Mr. Drain -
ie, one of Canada's finest ac-
tors and announcers, who died
a few years ago. Best public
affairs show seen on TV in the
last year, was " The Style Is
the Man Himself", and filmed
story of Prime Minister Tru -
dean,
One of the above winners,
Jackie Burroughs, has worked a
long time for this kind of rec-
ognition. Not a pretty girl, as
actresses go, she has performed
mostly on stage, both here in
Canada and in England, her na-
tive country. 'She has worked
at the Crest Theatre in Toron-
to, at the Manitoba Theatre,
Centre, and here at our own
Stratford Festival where she
first came to our attention. She
worked there in 1964, playing
the Queen in "Richard II", and
understudying Helen Bums who
starred in "The Co ,ntry Wife".
One night Miss Burns was ill
and Jackie went on in her place.
She now, says about that night,
"I think I was good --I'm al -
ways better when I'rn thrown a
bit". She goes on to say she
has never been invited back to
Stratford and 'isn't too sorry be-
cause it's a long summer and
there's nothing to do in Strat-
ford but 'join a motorcycle
gang'.
Since Stratford she hasspent •
a,time In NewmYork where she '
studied acting and dancing, . in
Montreal and in Vancouver.
She managed to get a foot in
the television door with first,
her performance in "Donna arid
Gail", and then her role in the
feature film, "The Ernie Game':
Then cartie "Dulcima "-and the
award. She has now completed
two more,. "Twelve and a Half
Cents" to be seen November
9th; and "Black Phoenix" shown i
on January 18th, and is now hav-
ing a 90 -minute television
drama written especially for her,
for production next season On
the personal side, Jacidi is
married to a musician and moth-
er of a 2 -year-old girl, Zoe.
Two October deaths have af-
fected the world of show busi-
ness. In Rome, actor Eduardo
Ciannelli died of cancer' at the
age of 81. He has made a num-
ber of movies, among them the
soon -to -be -released "Secret of
Santa Vittoria", starred in a
number of stage plays, and per-
haps as we best know him, play-
ed in the TV series "Johnny
Staccato" with John Cassavetes.
- In her native Scandinavia,
former Olympic skater and. mow
ie star Sonja Henle died, also
of cancer. In her 50s, 'she had
been retired from show business
for a number of years, devoted
her time to business investments
