The Wingham Advance-Times, 1969-10-23, Page 2Ps e 2 -- Winghaan 23, 1969 KAREN SUTCLIFFE AND JACK McPHERSON Students' .Council deserves support of student body Last Friday, the elections for class representatives to Students' Council were held. These nom- inations were left until this time, so that everyone could get well enough acquainted with classmates to be able to make a wise decision. . Perhaps this would be a good time to explain the set-up and function of the Council to any of the new people in the school. Each year, usually in Decem- ber, a campaign is h e l d in which anyone from grade eleven or twelve, not in his or her grad- uating year, is eligible to run for election. Eventually, six people come our on top. .This is OUR Students' Council chosen strictly by U S ! Last year we electedaMonty Templeman as president and Barb White as vice-president, along with John Collins, Mac. Galbraith, Paul Guest and Mar- ilyn Tiffin. These people are aided by Mr. Forrest, the staff advisor. Council's function is NOT to control school policy. It is there to help us by acting as a communication link between us and the administration: Among the numerous fears accomplish- ed by this group was sponsorship of many successful dances. Last year it made possible the first Christmas Party in which the whole school participated as a whole 'and has arranged lit meet- ings. It has held fund raising campaigns, in which all the money collected was used in a way in .which the student body wished --last year it was used to -furnish the Student Lounge. And the Students' Council has man- aged the annual Cancer Drive in which the students canvassed. • With all this responsibility. it is not *difficult to see that the Students' Council needs our aid and support. This is where the class reps, mentioned above, come i41 Since it is irhpossible to have 'all the.' students congre- gate to voice their opinions; :one member, from each class is elected to attend the meetings, to tell the Council exactly what • his or her classmates h a s in Mind, and to rrport to.. these classmates, any decisions made at the meeting. Anyone, wheth- er rep or not, is free to ,attend. So come on kids, let's.do our part and give Council our support. It's the least we can do for them after they've done so much for us! Spirit Days, the first such event in our school, ha .been planned for Wednesday, Thurs- day and Friday of this week. Since the story had to be writ- ten Monday in order to be ready for Wednesday publication, we will not be able to tell you ex- actly what did go on, but we can give you a general idea as to what will take place. On Wednesday a pep rally will be held in the morning, to give our football team the extra boost they need in the af- ternoon when they go out of town to play their big game. This will also be Purple and White Day - -during which a little more spirit may be aroused when all the students dress in our school colours. Thursday will be FrenchDay, devoted to the purpose of stim- ulating student interest in Ca- nada's co -language. There will be .a short French assembly in the morning. Being Hat and Tie Day as well the students will be fittingly attired for the "sock hop" to be held in the auditorium between 2:35 and 4:00 p. m. These pix will all be hung on the wall to compose some kind of mural. When Paul Guest announced this he didn't seem to be too -sure what kind of mural it would be. TEA Dorothy Van Beers Redmen defeat Madill Phantoms in soccer game BY NEIL HEMINGWAY The Madill Phantoms en- countered the Clinton Redmen in a soccer game at Winb.., m. Looking for our first win, we were determined to defeat the Redmen thus avenging a .previ- ous loss to them last fall in an exhibition game. Dur the first half, Ma - dill's forward line exerted great- er reater pressure than the Redmen's line. Unfortunately, Clinton scored on a shot which rico - cheted off one of the goal posts. Gary Whytock of Wingham tied the game with a shot from the 18 -yard line. The score re - mainedtied until half -time due to the superior goal tending of both Madill and Clinton. Early in the second half, another goal scored by G -a r y Whytock was ruled illegal due to a Madill offside. Clinton Redmen returned to score anoth- er goal. Time ran out a nd Wingham was unable to score the tying goal. The finalscore was Clinton Redmen 2; Madill Phantoms 1. Everyone on the team agrees that the teamwork has improved greatly. Greater things should be seen in future years. Craig Gilroy at football practice SAT.,OCT. 25 ANOI•ZE1-Ch'/I'1/OM DIuGG/S T JOSEPHINE. STREET.
