The nation's 100 million vehicle owners 'now have the choice
' of more places to have their cars serviced, and they're better
equipped and manned than ever before.
Foxample, nearly one-third of the service stations in this
country have either been replaced with new stations, or re-
modeled, in just the past five years. Independent garages, and
car dealers have also been expanding and modernizing their
service facilities at an impressive rate.
In addition to building improvements, these service outlets
also employ highly sophisticated service .techniques and equip-
ment. For example, there .is a tire changer that can remove a
tire from a wheel in aeven.seconds or less, and there is a newly -
introduced electronic ignition
analyzer that can 'check the

;condition of a car's complete erator to work from inside the
icar. Its combination of auto-
gnition system in a matter of
seconds without being con- oration and electronics pro- '
nected to the engine. duces considerable _savings in
time and labor.
There is also an automatic

Have you recently taken a
really good look at the finish
on your 'car? Studies by. lead-
ing automotive service maga-
zines, found three out'of every
four cars are lfl need' of body
repair and/or touch-up work.
When checking your ,car,
chances are you'll find finish
defects ranging from minor
stone -nicks to more sizeable
scratches, scrapes, or dents.
Close examination may even
produce evidence of more seri-
ous damage with rust appear-
. ing in the rocker panels, laver
portion of fenders, or at.other
points.
This time of year is an espe-
cially important one to make
needed repairs. For . winter
road conditions take a harsh
toll of car bodies.
Costing You. Money
Regardless of the origina-
tion or extent of the present
damage, it's costing you money
every day it goes unattended.
• Once paint is chipped away -
and bare metal is . exposed,
corrosive action begins and
r. will continue to grow until
:arrested and eliminated by
repair.
Metal deterioration can also
•, occur from beneath the car.
This usually goes undetected
• •until rust appears on the out-
. side surface after corroding
.the metal behind. (Under-
coating will, in most cases,
prevent the start of this latter
form of corrosion) .
In either case, the longer
the damage is neglected.' the
i more extensive and time con-
suming the repair becomes,
thus increasing your repair
bUl.
Once you're ready for re-
pairs, your next and most im-
portant step is to locate a rep-
; utable • auto body repair and
refinishing shop -- one that
has adequate facilities, mod-
ern equipment, and experi
enced personnel to do the job.
What Shop Can Do
Such a shop will have ample
parking and work space; mod-
ern metal working tools; qual-
• ityspray equipment; spray
booth with proper exhaust for
dust -free paint jobs;, force dry
(infrared) equipment for dry-
ing fresh paint in minutes as
opposed, to hours with air dry;
factory trained. spray opera-
tors.
A shop with these qualifica-
tions can assure you of a first-
rate, professional Job in the
shortest possible time. -
Don't settle for a 50% job at
a bargain basement price from
a shop that has makeshift fa-
cilities. It'll probably cost you
more in the long run through
costly re -work at a later date.
When tthe 'original beauty
has been restored to your car,
don't be misled into believing
it to be permanent. New dam-
age is likely to occur at some
future date and corrosion will
once again attempt its ugly
deed.
Periodic checks and contin-
uous, proper maintenance are
your only assurance of pro-
longing the original finish life.
Do this faithfully and you'll
derive the many benefits from
owning, driving, trading, or
selling a clean, rust -free car.
First Test Track
Built. in 1915
Proving groundsWere intro-
duced by the • industry in 1924.
. But what probably was the
first test track designed spe-
cifically to test , and evaluate •
production: vehicles was built
-by a Detroit auto maker back
in 1915. A -half-mile planked
track circled a steel -fabricated
"hill" more than 40 feet high,
which cs -had to .climb prior
to leaving the factory.
Cars were also required to
plow through a. sand pit and
travel around the track at all
speeds before being approved
for shipment. Before the track
was built, newly -assembled
vehicles were tested.on nearby
,city streets.
DIRT-- THE ENEMY
Dirt can be an enemy of
good car operation in more
ways than appearance. Small
particles' of dirt on the battery
terminals can stop your car
cold, To prevent this from
happening, make sure battery
terminals and connections are
cleaned thoroughly during
routine battery checks.

Not only are the facilities
and equipment of the industry
in a constant state of change
and modernisation., the char-
acter and scope of automotive
service is also changing.
Our second line of action in
keeping up with the mounting
car population . is continual
training of existing manpower
and the development of new
service technicians.
Training programs• spon-
sored by parts 'and equipment
manufacturers, oil companies
and manufacturers of vehicles
are being conducted every day
and every night all across the
country. •
Parts manufacturers,. some
2,000 of them, offer clinics on
the use and installation of
their products. One equipment
company has 36 training cen-
ters in all parts of the nation.
Portable CIaNsroomm
In addition • to fixed facili-
ties, many manufacturers have
portable classrooms that can
be taken to any Iodation:
Through the" use of mobile
training. vans, one company
conducted ignition clinics for
50,000 .technicians in a • year's
time.
Vocational training and auto
shop classes contribute to the
continuing flow of education
and also' to the development
.of new technicians.
We believe through "train-
ing, equipment and service
availability, the automotive
service industry's meeting the
challenge of keeping America
on the move. •
