Clear Vision Through Your Windshield
Cans dor Fresh New Wiper Blades
Oneof the major oil com-
pe,nies recently announced the
results of an inspection pro-
gram involvingthousands of
its :customers' cars. An alarm-
idg statistic revealed was that
eight out of ten of the cars
tested had unsafe windshield
'wipers.
Why such a high rate of bad
wipers? Probably because most
of us pay very little attention
to them until we have to use
them. Then it is inconvenient
to have them replaced. And

Service Stops
En -Route
Motorists who look for the
end of hard starting trouble
during warm spells may be in
for an unpleasant surprise..
Forr the ravages of winter driv-
ing may hit a critical area, the
wiring system. - •
As a result, starting may be
difficultand driving perform-
ance erratic. All this may stem
from salty slush sprayed on
the engine compartment or
extremely cold temperature
that,makes wiring brittle. And
less driving during . winter
means fewer stops at service
stations where potential trou-
ble may be spotted.
Inspection of ignition . wir-
ing along with other normal
services at tune-up time is in-
dispensable to good motoring.
Spotting signs of . wear may
catch present performance
trouble as well as preventing
future trouble.
Cracks. in wiring insulation
or corroded terminals can af-
fect engine . performance or
even cause complete break-
downs. There are several
causes for the cracks and cor-
rosion, especially in older cars,
Excessive oil, grease or at-
mospheric conditions can
cause wiring insulation to be-
come brittle and to , crack.
• Water and dust can enter these
cracks and partially 'ground
the high-tension voltage. As a
result, not enough current
reaches the spark plugs.
Another cause of wiring de-
terioration is corona. Corona
Is a magnetic field surround=-
ing the wiring and is caused
by high-tension current surg-
ing through the wiring.
This magnetic field is so
strong that it breaks down the
•surrounding oxygen, convert-
ing it into ozone.
Ozone attacks the insulation
and after a period of time de-
stroys the airing's usefulness.
Even a slight interruption of
full power can cut engine pow-
er greatly. The ignition system
builds an original 12 volts pow-
er into ar possible'25,000 •volts.
So a leakage of onevolt at an.
early ignition stage can cost
Up to 2,500 volts by the time
the spark plugs are reached.
To get Inaximum3 effective-
ness from ignition wiring, keep
it free from dirt, oil and grease.
All terminals should be in-
spected periodically for corro-
sion and for proper connec-
tions.
after the rain, we forget about
the wipers until we have to use
them again.
• Why unsafe? Because on-
coming headlights are magni-
fied in the smear caused by
streaking wipers. Because in a'
downpour, worn wipers will not
clear your windshield proper -

Smart automobile owners
make it a special point during
fall and winter to "Stay on top
of the weather."
This means knowing in ad-
vance not only what weather
conditions may be tomorrow,
but what they are like in the
area toward which the motor-
ist is headed on a longer than
"just about town" trip.
It is the.car radio, of course,
that is your "any time" pipe-
line `to the wanted weather in -
!Irritation, available from sta-
tions everywhere. .
When on a trip, one, should
have no difficulty in picking up
broadcasts from stations in
areas toward which the motor-
ist is travelling. In addition to
call letters they usually iden-
tify the city from which they
are broadcasting..
ly. You need every inch of
your windshield, clean and
clear, if you are to drive safely.
Equally frightening is the
rude awakening • to the fact •
that you are out of washer
fluid when ° your - windshield
has been splattered with mud.
When this happens, even the
best wiper blades can, cause
smears that cause accidents.
All wiper blades dry out
eventually and become hard,
due to exposure to sun, Wind
and oily road film; so you can-
not expect to get longer life
from your wipers just because.
you don't use them much. They
will deteriorate anyway over
a period of time, and a hard
blade is just as ineffective as
a worn one.
Don't wait until you can't
see out; to realize you should
have investigated new wiper
blades the last time you stop-
ped for gas. It might be too
late.
Instead, have the blades
changed every spring and fall.
And when new, blades still
seem to be ineffective, perhaps
new wiper arras are needed.
They wear out, too. . ,
Then ask, your service ars;
tion man to check your wind-
shield washer fluid while he
is probing around under the
hood of your car. Little things
like this can save your life.
Avoid the worry and strain
of a "Won't Start" morning!
