Twenty personnel from the
unit started out Saturday 50
walk the Bruce Trai 1. The
parry, all volunteers was made
up of officers, NCO 's and men
from all three sub units of the
Regiment, commanded by the
CO, Lt. Col. R. P. Ritter and
the second -in -command, Ma,
jor J. L. B. Melanson.
They left Wingham at 8. 30
Saturday morning via unit ve-
hide. debussed and started up
the trail. from Singharripton, neat
Collingwood. They spent the
evening at Devil's Glen provin.
cial park, where everyone got
into pack rations and cooked
individual meals by heattablets.
There was a good rain during
the night but all were protected
by ponchos as they doubled up
and made pup tents by button-
ing them together. (That is all
but one. He thought sleeping
out under the stars would be bet-
ter and now he knows. Some
people just have to learn the
hard way. )
•
• Altogether the unit covered
some 25 miles which was con-
sidered excellent training for
the young Gunners in respect of
moving with full personalequip-
ment over rough ground, plus
learning how to look afterthenk..
selves on the trail.
The unix returned to Wing -
ham at approximately 4.30
Sunday afternoon, tired but
with high morale. There is .
something about a good trek in
the open which g iv es one -a
sense of well being.

A New York psychiatrist who
stopped -smoking nine years ago
is not sold on scaring patients
into giving up cigarettes. ac-
cording to the Medical Post.
Speaking to the annual meeting
of rhe American Medical Asso-
ciation, Dr. Herbert Spiegel,
associate clinical professor of
psychiatry. College of Physici-
ans and Surgeons. Columbia Un-
iversity, New York, said the
negative approach rarely work-
ed.
pr. Spiegel outlined his
method of getting a patient to
commit himself to respect and
protect his body to distract his
attention away from the urge to
smoke. In a 45 -minute office
visit, about 10 rninutes is taken
up with testing the ability,of
the patient to be hypnotized.
The patient is taught how to in
the hypnotic sensations
himself. In this receptive state
of mind three basic points are
brought out: smoking is poison-
ous; you need your body to live;
you owe your body this respect
and protection.
To test the patient's suscep-
tibility to suggestion, Dr. Spie-
gel has one simple test. He
asks the subject to look up to-
wards his eyebrow and then
close his eyelids without mov -
Ing his eyes. If„a patient can
do this he can be hypnotized.
Once patients can induce hyp-
nosis, they are instructed to
practise it once every two bouts.
