Tanker out on
two fire calls
The Wingham; and Distric`
Fire Departmet:s ,rater,`tanker
was called out, twice( fit -the past
week, but fortunately on both
occasions there was , little or, Sb
property damage.
Shortly before the supper •
hour on Friday a fast run was
made to the farm of Harold Moi -
fat on the old road east ‘of 'Blue -
vale. A neighbor had s e e n
smoke rising, apparently from
the barn on the property and
phoned in an alarm. When the'.
firemen arrived' they found that
the owner was burning weeds
near the barn, but the building
itself was in no danger. ' ,
At 11:30,a.m, Monday the
tanker was called to a fire at
the farm of George E. Cowan on
the third line of Morris about
three-quarters of a mile west -of.
the Brussels -Jamestown road,
the former Lou Armstrong prop-
erty. Kenneth Cowan, 16, who
is a son of the oWner and h is
cousin, Kathleen, 11, of Chat-
ham were in the mow of the
barn when they saw that straw
near an electric light bulb was
smouldering. They forked the
burning straw out of the mo w
through an open doorway near-
by and Mrs. Cowan extinguished
the blaze on the ground w ith an
application of salt. Fortunate-
ly they were able to remove all
the burning straw before fire
spread to the remainder of the
material in the full mow. Need-
less to say it was a very close
call.
The Blyth Fire Department's
equipment was brought to the
scene and the firemen stayed on
the job till all danger of fire
was eliminated.
