Donkey baseball Rules
The talk of the town for the
last week has been Donkey
Baseball! And in order tb as
sist all in the rules of the game
and to understand the bonehead
diamond plays which will be
pulled by experts from the
teams; Town Fathers and Kins-
men, here's how the game is
played.
On hand will be eleven, real
live donkeys. Overheard one
fellow say the other night he
just couldn't convince his good
wife that real live donkeys are
used. Well, they'll be there.
They are positioned as follows:
three for basemen, three for
fielders, one for short stop.
ese donkeys remain in posi-
tion for both teams. The other
four donkeys are used as base
runners. The pitcher and catch-
er are the only players un -
mounted and they are confined
to a restricted area for their ac-
tivities. Players are not re-
quired to stay mounted at all
times but they must be on the
donkey's back to participate
in any play.
The donkeys are trainedto
do the wrong thing and just
naturally have a mind of their
own, which should result in
many hilarious situations.

Bases are circles four feet in

must be on the donkey and have
two of„its feet in the circle.
A player may go on foot to
recover a thrown or batted ball
but he must take his donkey
With him. We're bound to find
out whether its easier to ride,
tug or shoye the donkey) Be -
fore he can,,•rhrow the ball he
trust be on the donkey. So
players, don't be surprised if
you find after remounting that
you're facing the opposite dir-
ection from where you want to
throw the ball!
For the batter, an attendant
holds a donkey in readiness,
the batter trikes till he hits •
the ball even if it taken a hun-
dred swings --there's no easy
way to the bench by striking ,
out! As soon as the ball is hit,
the batter mounts the donkey
and is ready to start the circuit
of the bases, providing, of
course, the animal is wiling.
If the donkey decided to go CA
third instead of first, the strong-
est will prevails and donkeys
are not noted for being co -opera
ative. If a bat ter, in !two at-
tempts is unable to ride his
donkey between the bases, he
is automatically "out".
""Looks like an evening of
hilarious fun for the spectators
and from the talk of townspeo-
ple
there will be a packed park.
ust. about everyone will be
there. And remember, all pro-
fits will be' used to make much
needed, improvements at the
ball park. s
So until Friday night, June
13 at 8 p. m. , players and spec-
tators wait in a state of anxious •
anticipation. See you there!

I cannot praise highly enough
the talents of 142 young Canad-
ians who this year will become
known as The National Youth
Orchestra of 1969. Each year,
a talented group of kids train

during the summer months;each
year, of course, 'there will be
dopouts and additions, mainly

Speaking of the National
Arts Centre, we had a glimpse
of its official opening on CBC-
TV on June 2nd, along with a
guided tour with Bruno Gerussi.
The opening had taken place
on May 31st with filmed high-
lights shown on the 2nd;, with
actual events on the 2nd being
the debut of the new ballet by
The National Ballet of Canada.
The Centre cost a mere $4% -
000,000. and is situated 'on 6
acres of land beside the Rideau •
Canal near Parliament Hill in ,
Ottawa. It includes a 2300 -
seat opera house, an 800 -seat
theatre, a 300 -capacity experi-
mental studio theatre, a salon,
a 165 -seat restaurant, •a side-
walk cafe, two bookshops, a -
record store, and a 900 -car
garage. The stage of the opera.
house is second in size to only
the stage at New York's Lincoln
Centre; in fact, it is the only
opera house to have a stage
larger than its seating area. It
will present; in future years,
"the finest entertainment in the
world --dramatic and musical'
talent of the .finest calibre, . to
please everyone. If 'you plan
on vacationing in Ottawa in the
