BY THE QW OWNER
The past Week has been a
hectic one. The REE Weap-,
.ons inspection team has been
here inspecting weapons l anti.
there were three rifles that left
quite a bit to be desired,.
The Axirnibistrative Staff in-;
spection was carried out by
Major R. R. Lewis, .frorn Ds•
trict HQ, London; Capt. T. A.
W. Robson from the Regional o
HQ, Oakville; the Instructional
Cadre from HQ, Western On-
tario District -London, Capt.
F. S. Brown and Chief Warrant
Officer R. Hanlon. And like
all inspecting staffs. they asked
the most embarrassing questions
Then there was the week-
end exercise in Base Ipperwash
attended by personnel from all
three batteries for Strike Coy •
training with the third Battalion
RCR from London, Stratford and
Woodstock.. As your writer did
not attend this event it is rather
difficult to say how it came off.
However, we expect that the
g•u n n e r s, with their usual
aplomb, showed that they are
the most versatile. °
We have lost our part time •
assists t, Sgt. B. B. MacLean,
who left for the St. Thomas
Nose al. However, Barry vias
bac for the week -end exercise
to perform the duel functions !
of Clerk - QM.
Now to get ready for the
formal parade and Inspection
taking place this Thursday event
ing. There is much work to be
done by all and particularly
the administration attendant.to
this sort of thing.
Congratulations are in order,
for members of the unit who
have been doing double duty
lately. They have been very.

The young people of this
calibre restore our faithin the
younger generation. These are
the future leaders of this nation.
I suspect the same rule of thumb
applies to teen-agers as applies
to soldiers: "It takes ten good
ones to overcome the actions of
one bad one. "

Our defensive driving tip for
this week:
When you are the second or
third car stopped at a red light
or stop sign, allow the vehicle
ahead to proceed at least two
car lengths before proceeding
yourself. If he should make a
sudden stop at the other side of
the intersection for a pedesteri-
an or a car goingthrough a red
light from the other street, you
will have sufficient time to
stop, avoiding a rear end or
side collision. A lot of acci-
dents at intersections could be
solved if drivers would apply
this rule. Drive to live.

LOCATION .
Most municipal bylaws forbid
the use of public property or
streets for private fireworks dis-
plays. A backyard, or your
front lawn, is a natural setting
for your celebration. Insure
there are no overhead wires,
branches or other obstructions,
and that your firing bases are
at least 25 feet from the near-
est building.
EQUIPMENT •
Family assortment package.
Additional sparklers, if desired.
Two buckets or boxes , or a'
wheelbarrow, filled with sand
or earth. .A garbage can or oth-
er large metal container, pre-
ferably partly filled with water.
A pail of water, or a garden
hose nearby. Matches.
And, of course, no firecrack-
ers. Firecrackers should not be
_allowed at your fireworks dis-
play.
DISCIPLINE
Younger children -are always
fascinated by. fireworks a n d
make a perfect audience, but
they should NEVER participate
in thc actual lighting of the
pieces. Older children may be
taught to handle fireworks cor-
rectly under close adult super-
vision. All spectators should be
kept away at a safe distance,.
One person ONLY should be
in charge of firing.
With the single exception of
sparklers, NO -firework is intend-
ed to be held in the hand when
ignited.
PYROTECHNIC STAGE
The two buckets of sand al-
low you to set up double firing
bases, rather than just one. Set
them about 12 feet apart. This
way you can maintain good

novelty as one is performing.
Also, if for some reason a piece
docs not go off, you can let it
sit for awhile and continue the
show from the other base.
Place the large metal con-
tainer with water between your
firing bases so that it is conven-
ient for disposing of used novel-
ties and refuse. Keep thc pail
of water or garden hose handy
to sprinkle any smoldering
pieces.
FINAL PREPARATIONS
Before dusk, be sure to read
the instructions printed on each
novelty, and select two stars
for your production --a large
novelty to lead off, and t h e
largest of all to wind it up.
Prior to their use, and through-
out the show, all fireworks
should be kept in the box in
which they come, withthe lid
CLOSED, to keep out stray
sparks.
All long novelties' should be
buried at least halfway down in ,
the firing base, and sct at a 10
degree angle AWAY from spec-
tators.
Light fireworks at arm's
length, standing back and keep-
ing face away.
In the event a firework docs
not go off, do not attempt to
relight it.. Let it sit in the base,
do not go near it for several
minutes. Then douse it with
water, and carefully place it in
the refuse cotitaittcr.
It is pretty mess y when a
washing machine bubbles over,
so keep a box of s a l t in the
laundry room to sprinkle on suds
that threaten to overflow.
