If the walls of the old `lt'
esters Hall, Belgrave, couY
only talk,we would not find it
so difficult to write a fitting
history of its origin and the im-
portant part it played in. die
community.
In 1880 a group of men .ap-
pled for a Charter which they
received on January 1, 1881,
The -Charter formed Court No.
48, Belgrave, of the Canadian
Order of Foresters of Ontario,
The Foresters' Hall was built
around 1888, on eland held in
trust by several members, in
Morris Township, in the village
of Belgrave. It would seem
this hall was not large enough
for all the concerts, socials.,
etc. , as their records show they
bought more land, July 18, 1912
from the Knox Presbyterian

It was around this time an
addition was built to the north
end of the hall. A basement
was dug, a furnace installed,
and a large stage built about
three feet above the floor level,
They put on .a beautifully dec-
orated canvas t yp e curtain
which was attached to rollers
and wound up and down by
means of a crank and ropes.
The curtain was used unti191954,
when the Women's Institute
bought track and material from
part of the proceeds of the mu-
sical comedy, "Happiness
Ahead". The ladies made the
present green curtains and pre-
sented them to the Foresters.
During the First World War,
Foresters' Hall was alive with
many a c t i v i t Fes and social
events with patriotic concerts
put on to raise money for war
work. The Red Cross, Farmer's
Institute, Women's Institute
and others, as well as the For-
esters rnet in the hall.
In 1920 •the Belgrave School
Fair was organized and held
there and in surrounding church
sheds until the Community Ar-
ena was built in 1949. The
two-day music festival was
held in the hall from the late
1930's until the new East Wawa -
nosh Public School was built''In
1967.
-Some f the caretakers of
Foresters' Hall were Mr. and
Mrs. Ceasar, William Geddes.,
john A. Geddes, Bob McKen-,
zie, Calvin Robinson, Harr y
McGuire, Johnnie Nixon a n d
Sam Pletch.
In 1918 the Foresters made a
special effort to pay off their
debt and held an Irish and Scot-
ish concert with a competition
to see which could put on the
better concert. Nobody re -
members which won, but Dr.
Harry Kirby told many tales of
the wonderful talent presented.
In June they held a garden party
at Gamer Nicholson Sr's and a
highlight was the big bonfire
and burning of the mortgage on
the hall.
In the 1680's the' ':1: ptit' bn
a series :of yearly concerts and
with renewed interest some im-
provements were made by the.
Foresters and institute working
together.
In 1961 the Wingham Forest-
ers amalgamated with Belgrave,
forming Court Belmait No. 25.
In 1968 they amalgamated with'
the Court. Constance. The Court
Belmait offered the hall to the
