at an increase of salary, which is now
$500.

Mr- Malcolm McGillivray of Goder-
ich, has joined the Mission Band, and
gone away out west to impart the
word of God to the heathen. His

Mr. Samuel Cox, of Goderich Town-
ship, has sold his 80 -acre farm, the
one he has occupied, to Mr. Alex.
Young, ofgintail, for the sum of
$4.000.
Mr. D. D. Wilson of Senforth last
week shipped to Victoria, B. C., a
car -load of eggs and butter, the freight
charges on which amounted to over
six, hundred dollars.
Arlarge summer hotel is about to be
erected at Goderich. The Point Farm
is the only one there at present and
the adventurers in the erection have
much faith in Goderich as a summer
resort.
\Jr. Simon McVittie, of the IIth
concession Hullett, passed away last
week to his long home. Mr. McVittie
td 'as nearly eighty years of age, his
life being a long and uaeful one. He
came to Hullett thirtysix years ago.
Miss Kate Brine, daughter of Mr. J.
P. Brine of Seaforth, lett for Colorado
on Tuesday last where she wilt be
,joined in the bonds of marriage to Mr.
Allan McLean, ot' that place, formerly
of Seaforth.
Rev. J. M. EIodson, B. A., the well-
known Methodist pastor of Windsor,
has the champion record for joining
hearts and hands. During 1887 he
helped 78 couple to happiness and he
promises to beat this record all hollow
this year.
The flexibilility of the English
language was shown the other day by
the reply of a son of Erin to a visitor
during the recent rain storms. 'You
have quite a pond on the floor,' said
the visitor. 'Yis 1 sure wo have a

A meeting of the Mitchell board of
trade was heti in the council chamber

cussion took place on the Nutter
question. Steps are to he taken to
establish a cash market for butter with
graded prices according to the quality
of the article. The above is what Ex-
eter wants, and will hove ere long.
A few days ago a young horse be-
longing to Kr. Joseph Stenzel of
Leadbury, broke through the cover-
ing of a well and fell to the bottom, a
distance ot ten feet- A number of
neighbors speedily gathered and dug
a sloping roadway down, when the
animal walked out very little the
worse for hfs wild adventure.
Twenty hotel.keepers of London,
who provide stabling accommodation
for the general publio, have decided
to adhere to the following increased
tnrifi', considering the high price of
fodder :—`ingle horse to hay, 15 cts.;
to hay and oats, 25 cents. Team to
hay, 25 cents ; to bay and oats, 50
cents. Stable room without feed, 10
cents.

The citraens of Mitchell are opposed
to the electric light contract and an
Injunction against the consummation
of the sante has been issued. It is
claimed the price proposed to pay is
too high. The council, however, in-
tend dr -fending the suit.
Fire broke out Friday afternoon in
the stable of Mr. A. MoD, Allan of
Goderictt. A high wind prevailed at
the time, and in a short time the
stable and contents were totally de-
stroyed. Loss, about $300.
Mr, W. 3awderr, of Clinton, started
on Mond.ty for the old country, with
120 head of cattle. Among the lot
was a steer for which he paid the sum
of $145 --certainly a good price.
Tlie failure of Mr. 'Phos. Welsh, of
Goderich township, with liabilities to
the amount of $5000, concerns a num-
ber of parties in Clinton, who are in
for pretty heavy amounts.
Two brothers were summoned from
Sarnia and Point Edward respectively
to St. Marys by telegrams stating that
their mother was dead. The fool -kil-
ler is badly needed in the immediate
vicinity of the author of this piece of
heartless idiocy.
Rev. J. E. Howell, M. A., Seaforth,
has ascepted the invitation of the Ber-
lin Methodist Church to become their
pastor. Rev. C. Moore, Platteville, has
accepted a similar invitation to Eles-
pel ler,
Mr. M. G. Cameron, deputy -reeve
of Goderich, wilt remove to Toronto
at the end of this year to engage in
the legal profession there.
The Middlesex County Jail contin-
ues to he overcrowded, and instead of
the number of prisoners diminishing
it is steadily increasing as the cold
season approaches.
Mr, Wm. John Hall, of the 9th con-
cession of Ashfield, took a nag ofpota-
toes to R. A. Clow, Lucknow, the
other day that were very large. Every
potato in the bag averaged from two
to three pounds and some six
pounds eacch.
Some time ago Mr. leo. Flintofl, of
Hullett, was visited by a couple of
men who persuaded him to take an
agency for a washing machine, on the
sale of which he was to receive a
liberal commission. Before they left
the agents got Mr, Flintoff's signature
on notes to the extent of $650.
Mr. John •Tyreman, of McKillop
township, has purchased the farm, lot
35, con. 1, McK.iliop, containing 100
adres of exceilent land from Mr. Ralph
Thompson for the sum of $6,800. Mr.
Tyreman has been living in Manitoba
for some time past and we are pleased
to have hits in our .midst once more.

was recently charged with committing
an unnatural cfh'nce by his father -in
law, Artemeas Bice, and his brother-
in•law, Eli Bice, has, through his solic
itor, Mr. G. N, Weekes, instituted an
action for $2,000damages formallcious
and slanderous prosecution. The ease
wal be heard sit the next sitting of
the Assize Court in London.
