pr by Step, It's Easy
' tial ing a resilient tile floor
tit the home is simply a matter
flowing the instructions on
e box. But, like sewing a
Brett or making a boat, there
are parts of the job that require
,special care.
First, choose the tile care-
fully --type, color and design.
The family will be living with
it a long time.
Vinyl asbestos wears well,
comes in a.variety of patterns
and colors and is easy to main-
tain.
Before the floor is installed.
the.subsurface should be care
fully checked for any uneven-
ness. It must be free from wax,
paint, oils. grime or varnishes.
Floor covering dealers will be
able to advise on the best under
layment for the area.
As many resilient tile de-
signs are now available*in 12 -
by -12 inch squares, it's easy to
figure how many will be needed.
The number is the same as the
square footage of the room. In
a 10 -by -12 foot room, 120 12 -
by -12 inch tiles (10 per cent of
the total) will be needed, for
cutouts and future replacement
in case of damage.
if nine -by -nine inch tiles
are used, about 2 0 0 will be
needed for a 1Q -by -12 room.
After ,the subsurface is smooth
and clean, mark the center
point of the room with a taut
chalk line. Begin by' marking
the center of the two end walls
of the room, snap the string to
transfer the chalk to the floor,
and repeat on the two side walls
Where the chalk lines meet is
the center of the room. '
These two chalk lines must
be atan exact right angle. You
can check this way: Starting
from the center point•where the
lines meet, measure exactly
four feet toward a side wall and
make a mark. Do the same to-
ward the opposite wall.
o Install Resi
FOR A RESILIENT tile floor
to wear well, the subsurface must
be absolutely smooth. Sand-
paper rough spots, fill in holes,
says Better Floors Council.
SPREAD AL1kIESIVE evenly
and thinly over a quarter of
the floor. Let adhesive set until
it is dry to the touch before
laying the tile.
AROUND PIPES or other.:ob-
stacies, make paper paw to
tit exactly. Trace onto a, tile.
Warm tile slightly and it , will
cjµt easily.
TO FIT last row, place a loose
Weover last cemented tile. Slide
another tile. over : it,, up to wall.
Mark the "sandwiched'" tile
with a pencil, and cut.
•
Starting from the center once
more, measure three feet to-
ward an end wall. Make a third
mark . Using a long ruler or
tape, lay it between the first and
third marks. The distance
should be exactly five feet. So
should the other side.
Using the chalk lines as a
guide, lay two uncemented rows
of tile perpendicular to each
other, marking off one quarter
of the room. Adjust the test
row so that the tile is about six
inches from the wall for 12 -inch
tile, and four and one-half
inches for nine -inch tile. This
insures an even border around
the room.
Remove the rows of test tile
and spread the recommended
adhesive over that quarter of
the room, being careful not to
cover the chalk line. Spread
adhesive evenly andunot too
thickly. Be sure to follow man-
ufacturer's instructions.
Adhesive must be dry to the
touch before laying tile.
Starting at the center, care-
fully place each tile= -don't
slide --butting each to the ad-
joining one. Continue for each
quarter of the room.
When finished, check the
floor carefully and remove any
adhesive from the face of the
tile.

MEET SPECIAL NEEDS •
:Like every family, this one
had special needs. A ho me
office for both parents was a
must. Piano studies for a tem -
age girl and trumpet lessons for
her older brother demanded
Space for instruments and priv-
acy for daily practice.
In this case, a design firm
was engaged. for a careful
study of family needs and the
existing home structure.
They looked into the base-
ment to find room for expan-
sion. The result? A combina-
tion library, office and music
room were created, without
rhijor constnietion changes.
Original storage area ' and a
laundry room were preserved.

Improvements Pay
In More Than Cash
Outdoors, homes are getting
a facelift with everything from
new roofing and siding to new
patio furniture and plantings.
Indoors, rooms are responding
to the magic of paneling, paint-
ing, wallpapering, flooring.
Kitchens go modern; family
rooms grow out of attics and
basements;. bathrooms expand
and multiply. Repair and re-
modeling, expansion and mod-
ernization are in the air --it's
home improvement time!
What's all this in aid of?
Some proponents of home im-
provement hold that it's worth-
while to remodel because it's a
good investment. Improving a
home, will increase property
value and pay off with a better
resale price,, they say. True
Furtre moulded from
'foam for easy care
Ho - work is becoming light-
er all the time --thanks to the '
ingenuity of chemical compan-
ies and furniture manufacturers.
Strange bed -fellows? Not so
when it is realized that .feather-
weight plastics are rapidly re-
placing traditional materials -
used for chairs, settees, desks
and bureaus. •
Most exciting of the new
plastics is rigid urethane foam,
and it's being used in a manner
that opens up opportunities for .
free -form styles impossible to
achieve using materials such as
wood and metal. The way it
works is a specially formulated
mixture of e chemical is
poured to alu m or fibre-
glass moulds. • In matter of
seconds the mixture expands to
30 times its original.. volume
and forms a lightweight, yet
remarkably strong rigid foam.
It takes less than 10 minutes for
the foam to harden. After cool-
ing, the mould is opened and
the urethane shell removed. A
chairdiell weighs about two
pounds!
• The shell is given a thin lay-
er of plastic foam padding and
a sheath of either soft vinyl
upholstery or washable nylon
fabric, is slippeii over it. In
some cases loose cushions are
added. The total effect is one
of. elegance 'and solid 'comfort.
• Moulded urethane<fumiture

modern living. It can be; de-

trend, it is ea§y care, it lends

niques and it makes light house-
keeping . even lighter!
Moms Want
Mudroom
A mudroom is one of t h e
most -wanted home additio`ti§',
especially among hornemalters
with small children.
Chief purpose of the mud -
rootrt is to trap mud, snow and
other dirt before it gets into the
living area. It does so by chang-
ing the traffic pattern into the
house. •
The well-equipped mudroom
should have a water closet, a
.sink with hot and cold water, a
drinking fountain, a'place to
hang clothes and a work count-
er where flowers can be arrang-
ed and vegetables fresh from the
garden can be washed.
This means that the mudroom
is not only a place to shed damp
boots and clothes before enter-
ing another part of the house,
it's also ideal for children to use
while playing or gardeners while
working in the yard.
Ideal place for a mudroom
is just off the kitchen. Other
good spots are the garage or
the laundry room, if it has an
outside entrance.
DECORATIVE PANELING and design ingenu-
ity combine to convert wasted basement space
into multi-purpose family room. Hidden, touch-
latch built-ins hold magazines, music, home
office supplies. Folding metal doors lead to
laundry. Paneled divider wall . beyond stairs
conceals guest room.

nance.
e nough--but< there's mor e to
home improvement thanproper-
ty value.
Remodeling pays its own di-
vidends. For one thing, it en-
ables families to enjoy a better
over-all standard of living. '
Children stay at home w hen
they h ve more space to play in.
Tensions tween parents and
children are less, when a second
bathroom relieves the u s u a l
morning congestion, or when
there's a basement family room
for play or entertaining. •
SAVES TIME FOR MOM
Converting an attic into a
*bedroom or study can mean less
time spent in front of television
and better grades in school. It
can mean a place for D ad to
catch up on office work --or, it
can provide guestroom space
for overnight --or longer visits
from friends and relatives.. -
For Mom, of course, a more
spacious, better -equipped kitch-
en or laundry can mean a new
lease on life. She will have
moretime to spend in-commun-
ity
n-commun-it,y activities, or in pursuingthe -
hobby she once dropped to raise
a family.
Improvements like th es e
make a house more livable.
