as a holiday, A good deal of shooting was
done by the young men, with more or less
success. In the evening a Thanksgiving
service was held in the Methodist ohuroh,
when Rev, Mr. Still delivered a very ap-
propriate discourse. Mr, Jamieson also
made an address which was well received.

pleasant evening at the residence of Mr.

L. 0. L. No. 216. -The Royal Scarlet
Chapter was convened on the 14th Nov.
with District -Master J. Neil, W, C., in
the chair, assisted by Bro. Floody, County
Master, of Clinton ; and after general bus-
ineee was transacted tnere were live mem-
bers raised to the illustrious degree of
Royol Scarlet Knights. After the chapter
was closed, at half past two, there was a
good supper served in the hall by the com•
panions. -
BRxErs.-1 noticed in a local paper A
few weeks ago some remarks anent an
Orange gathering, here, on the 5th of Nov.
amongst which the statement was made
that the Rev. Mr. Houston is a fine speak-
er, but that the subject he chose was not
interesting to Orangemen, Why not?
Your correspondent is an Orangeman and
I would like to ask the person who penned
the note in question if he ever read the
Orange constitution, or has he ever taken
the solemn pledge that every Orangeman
take& ? What should interest a true
Orangeman if the temperance cause does
not? I am also sorry that Mr. Floody
treated Mr. Houston's subject so slightly.
If we were all temperance Orangemen we
would be able with a true and good spirit
to sing, "God Savo the Queen."
Lucan.
Bnioys.-Rev. Dr. Griffin, of Stratford,
preached the anniversary services of the
Methodist church, Lucan on Sunday last.
The attendance was large and the collec-
tions gratifying. -The band discoursed
sweet music on Thanksgiving Day. -The
assembly announced for Friday night took
place and proved successful in every sense.
There -a ere sixty couples present, and the
music furnished by the Italian string band
of London was much appreciated by all. -
The roller rick will be opened in a few days
the floor being almost completed. It is a
fine bnilding and the enterprise of the pro.
prietor should be appreciated by the citi-
zens by lending a liberal support. --LA very
unwise and dangerous mode of shunting
cars at this point on the Grand Trunk has
been adopted. Almost every day the arri-
val of the wayfreight is dreaded by pedes-
trians farm'ts and teamsters. When
within one mile of the station the speed of
the locomotive is increased and the train
is cut into turee sections, crossing main -et
in as many detachments at least at one
hundred yards apart. After the locomotive
eras passed the switch, the switch is turned
and the cars to be left at Lucan allowed to
run unto the side track; and before the
third section has had time to arrive the
switch is properly adjusted and the first
and third section are again coupled togeth-
er on the main line. Such may save the
railway employees some work but it is de-
cidedly dangerous and objectionabld to the
general public, and the authorities should
move to have this novel ';vay of shunting
cars, especially when a public staoet has to
be crossed, at once discontinued,Mrs.
Shipley of Exeter was visiting friends here

the guest of the Misses Harrigan last week.

to one of the wires being broken. -The

CONonwr.-The concert on Tuesday evg.,
under the auspices of the A, 0. F., was a
success, financially and otherwise. The
night was bitterly cold, but notwithstand-
ingithe ateendance was good, people being
present from far and near. The comical
dram "A Rough Diamond," was given,
and the caste of characters would have
been well received by a city audience. They
performed their respective parts creditably.
The children also did famously, and were
web applauded. The Committee and sev-
eral friel+ds, tinder whose snperintendance
the affair was gotten up, deserve much
praise, and we believe were a similar enter-
tainment to be again presented the audi-
ence would be still larger. A number of
the Brethren from Exeter and other places
were present. The proceeds amounted to
about $50. —
