"The Salvation Army and
the Alcoholic will be the top-
ic when Brigadier J. Monk,
superintendent of The Salva-
tion Army's Harbour Light
Corps, visits Wingham on Tues-
day. There are estimated to
be nearly 100,000 alcoholics in
the Province of Ontario. Te
Metropolitan TorontoiUarbour
Light Centre affords treatment,
care and guidance to `an aver-
age annually of 77 men. Ap-
proximately 30'b of these men
become restored each year to
useful living in society.
Some of. the Brigadier's re-
marks will be concerned with
• ' the new 'farm project'. The
_'farm project' consists of 200
,acres,, of beautiful rolling farm-
land Situated at Glencairn, On-
tario The transformation of
tem buildings, particularly the
barn, roust be seen to be
believed, for where hay, cattle
,and.feed Were once housed,
;bright modern facilities for
sleeping,; recreation and voca-
tional training now stand as a
tribute to the ingenuity •of the
•men, of Hope Acres, who ac-
lally-built their own home;
a . Following his arrival in
Wingham the Brigadier will
address the staff of The 'Wing -
ham and District Hospital on
the subject of alcoholism. A
men's luncheon will be held in
the Salvation Army citadel at
6:30 p. in. and a public meet-
ing will be conducted at 8:00
p. rn. All interested men are
invited to the luncheon while
the general public is cordially
invited to attend the 8:00 serv-
ices
Last call for
men's basketball'
BY JIM WARD
An attempt was made before
Christmas to start a Men's bas-
' ketball league at the public
school. Over the course of
several weeks there were prob-
ably enough to start a league,
but at.agy one time there were
only enough out to have a pick'.
up game with barely enough to
floor a team.
All those interested are urg-
ed to be at the public school on
Tuesday, January 21 at 9.00.
Teams will be picked if a suf-
ficient number of people are
interested, but if not basketball
will be dropped,
If there are high school boys
who have not made the senior
team they would also be welcome
to play, It is understood that :if
the boys are playing on aschool
team they are not allowed to
play in any other league. It
seems odd that one could not
try to improve his skills by
playing as much as he could.
In any case it is hoped that as
many will try to attend this
meeting as possible.
Badminton
BY JIM WARD
.Over the years a fairly ac-
tive badminton club operated
in Wingham. Their facilities
were none too fancy to hear the
stories of former members. -
They had but one court to play
on, the ceiling was low and
the lights were dim. But one -
thing that was not ldw 'was the
enthusiasm.
Two courts are now being
used at the public school where
the lights are bright, theceil-
ing is high, but oddly enough

hydrants in town after the big storm last week. A. snow
blower was called in to do the jobb--A-T Photo.

the enthusiasm has waned.
There are a few people who
would like to see this club ac-
tive and have been attending
regularly. Anyone who would
like to join them may do so
Monday evenings at 7.30.
There is the possibility that
the club could re -situate if ,
more members would join.
