The Observation Post

There ha* been; so Hauch

this fall that it is most difficult
to report it all at the time it is
happ+.nim . So please bearwith
US, dear reader,
There was a real bang up
party (diluter and dance) held
at 100 Battery in Listowel on
"November 23 for the retiring
Chief Warrant Officer (Regi-
mental Sergeant Major) John
Blackwell Of Teeswater. All
Non -Commissioned Officers.,
the CO, 2nd in Command, the
Battery Commanders of 97, 99
and 100 Batteries, their ladies
and guests attended. ' You know
the sort of deal, one of those. .9
formal affairs. The girls really
go for them. It was most en-
couraging to see you young
NCO's and their girl friends` in
attendance. And there were
some without girls, too. How-
ever the;older chaps are not so
much for thath.dancing.bit and
the younger fellows did the
pinch hitting for us.

The new rates of pay for the
Canadian Army Militia have
just arrived. At time of writ-
ing it looks goofs, especially
for the fellows who come in,
take the courses and work their
way up. Example, ;Gunner
who has completed basic train-
ing and has completed his ar-
tillery training now gets x$7.00
per day as opposed to $4.87. A
Bombardier will now get $9.10
per day, old rate $7.17..Serg-
cants new $Il. 60, old rate
. $7.97. If they goon call -out

21st Field Regt. retires
CWO (RSM) John Glenn Black-
well who has served with 21
Field Regiment RCA(M) of
Wingham, Walkerton and Lis-
towel, has retired after 23 years
of service from Gunner to Chief
Warrant Officer. .
Jack, as he is known to his
friends, was born April 20, 1930
in Teeswater. He°was educated
• in Teeswater public and high
schools. ' He is a master plumb-
er and works for Dickison Plumb-
ing and Heating Contractor of
Teeswater.
Jack has been a community
Minded person and has• been
very active in the Boy Scouts;
put in six years on the School
board, two years on the Tees -
water town council, has been
assistant chief of the Teeswater
Volunteer Fire Department.
All this, and has nine children
too. One of his boys is attend -
in UWO in London working on
hisdegree in physical educa-
tion and history. Young John
Jr was also a member of the 99
Battery. Jack has three other
children attendii'rg the F. E. Ma-
dill Secondary School and two
attending the Teetwater Public
School. The remainder are at
home.
CWO Blackwell has been a
loyal member of this unit. He
was active on the regimental
rifle tear'. He was one of the
unit's two qualified marksmen
last spring. Jack has a good
memory and has amazed peo-
ple with his recollections of
74
times past when the unit res
called the 21*t Anti -Wank Regi-
ment. Jack either holds qual-
ifications or has a working
knowledge of all phases of ar-
tillery work and has helped
many a new gun sergeant during
firing practice. 'He Vas always
ready to lend a hand or give
advice on matters within his
Jurisdiction. Men of CWO
Blackwell's calibre don't just
come along every day. How - `
ever, Huron, Bruce and Perth
counties have a knack of pro-
ducing men like John. and he is
also proud that there have been
a number of good young men
from' these tomtits and 21
Field Regiment.
Jack and his wife Mildred
were presented with a black
leather recliner chair and a
dozen roses, at the dinner and
dance in his honor held in Lis-
towel. This was the beginning
of real consternation for mem-
bers of the Mega Committee as
it was drawn to their atter ,on
two days before the event•that
ante of Jack's boys had saved his
pennies and had bought his Dad
the exact item. When con-
fronted with the second chair
Jack's comment, "Well, one
lar Ma and one far Pp". Wonder
if he has them labeled yet.
