Dec. 12, 19 Robert McClenaghan celebrates his 100th birthday Robert McClenaghan who celebrated his 190th birthday at the A. H. Goudie Eventide H r me in Kitchener at the week- end vas interviewed by the Kitchener -Waterloo Record and the following article appeared in Saturday's edition. "Robert McClenaghan isn't nearly as excited as the people, around him. "He accepts the fact that he is 100 years old today without too much fuss. His many friends at the Eventide Home, 369 Frederick St. , are holding a birthday party for him today and he is taking it all in his stride. "After all, he has had 99 other birthdays and as far as he is concerned, ,life really be- gins at 100. "Mr. McClenaghan has made many good friends in his past seven years at the home, Be- fore that he lived with his son, Clarence, ;iof Windemere, "He was born. in Kinloss Township, Bruce County, near what is °now Wingham. Mr, Mc- Clenaghan e-Clenaghan lived and farmed there until he. was 85, when he retired. "For 85 years he has been a member of the same church, the former Methodist Church and now the United Church at Whitechurch. He was church treasurer for 45 years., "In 1911 he married the for- mer Jean Cook of Elora. They had one son, Rev. R. Clarence McClenaghan, 55, now minis ter of the Windemere United Church. His wife died just af- ter he retired 15 years ago. His daughter-in-law is the former Ruby Knowlesof Kitchener. "He is keenly interested in the present hydro power devel- • oprnent plans for Bruce County • at Douglas Point. "In the early days of elec- tricity he was instrumental in having hydro brought into the rural areas of Kinloss. "He remembers with asmile how frightened'people were of electricity. They would turn on the lights for only about an hour at night and then shut them off and light coal oil lamps. "He still doesn't wear glass- es and still has good hearing. "What is his seer t for a long life? It is no secret, he said. He received good early training and good habits from his parents, attended Sunday School and learned the Presby- terian shorter catechism. And the amount of buttermilk he drank, "probably had some- thing to do with it, " "But he said lots of hard work didn't hurt him and he never smoked; although he packed his grandmother's pipe frequently. "Farming has changed rad- ically since he began. At first he used oxen to plow the land, then he owned several teams of horses and finally tractors and modern machinery. "Machinery has made the big changes in farming. He forecast the day when small farm operators will disappear. "One of the main problems today is the numerous taxes, he said. The catch today is that there are too many taxes. Howick Lions Bingo winners. Regular Games: 1. D o n Riopelli, Detroit. 2... Mrs. Ed Scott, Listowel. 3. .Mrs. Art Wheeler, Wroxeter, Mrs. Harry .
