On Saturday Mr. John Penhale, far-
mer Yarmouth, while on the sca>'I'old
in his barn, fell to the ground, a dis-
tance of twenty feet, through a board
breaking His foot was broken and
his shoulder dislocated; and be was
badly shaken up and bruised.
Lot No. 13, in the eight concession
of the township ot Ellice, 100 acres
swamp, has been sold for $1,375
to Mr. Jacob Bald of the township of
Downie; and lot Ne. 46, in Sarman's
survey, on Caledonia street Stratford,
containing a half -acre of land, has
been disposed of for $600 to Mr James
Brady, Stratford.
Mr. James Elliott, who lived on the
third concession of Logan, and was an
old and highly respected resident of
that township, was gathered to the
grent majority at his home on Sunday
evening last, in the 71st year of his
age: Deceased was a native of Ireland
and emigrated to this country when
quite young.

The will ot the late Wm, Stacey of
Blaushard, has been entered for pro-
bate at the Surrogate court on behalf
of the executors, Rebecca Stacey, wife

valued at $7,900, and is divided among
thewidow, four sons and two daughters.
The following hotel -keepers were
lined for violation of the Scott Act in
Middlesex County last week:—Peter
McAlpine, R. R. McKellar, end Arch.
McCrae, all of Glencoe, were fined
$300 each for second violations of the
Canada Temperance Act. The case
against Hugh McKee, of Strathburn,
was dismissed. Alex. Graydon and
William Hayes, of Newbury, $IOOalso.
On Thursday morning last fire broke
out in the carriage works owned and
J . J. Fisher & Co., Kincardine. The
fire was got under control. Mr, Myra
Fisher, eldest son of Mr. John Fisher,
while making his way to the office,

W. H. Pray, of the Alvinston Stave and
Heading Works, recently shipped twenty
oarloacls of orange barrels to Cuba. This
amounts to over twenty-five thousand
barrels. During the past month forty-five
carloads of other cooperage stook has been
shipped from this establishment to foreign
markets.

Judging from the ADVOCATE Mitchell
must be a heathenish place, There
were two entertainments there last
week, and atone some of the audience
were so unruly that' the manager was

Some time since Saturday last two
two-year old colts are supposed to
have been stolen from the farm of Mr,
T. H. Mee, Adelaide. The animals
were . asturing, with five others, on
Mr. Mee's farm, and were last seen on
Saturday, the 13th. One is a chestnut
mare, with sorrel main and tail, and
bas a white star in forehead, the other
a light bay gelding, with black main
and tail, and has a small white stripe
on the face.
Messrs. Jos. Keefe and Patriok
Nangle are the two largest assessed
ratepayers in the township of Biddulph
whilst Mr. Wm, Grant, of Granlon,
stands at the head as the largest rate-
payer in Biddulph. The first
named
gentlemen are assessed $20 each more
than Mr. Grant, but his school rate is
much higher thus giving him the
proud distinction of being the king of
ratepayers.
A London exchange says: ---;#A Hor-
ton street lady not long since found a
cuff -button on her parlor floor. She
knew it was not her husband's and
asked the neighbors and callers if it
belonged to them. No one claimed it,
and it was a mystery to her how it got
in her house till the other day, when
she sat down to play her melodeon,
and found that some sneak thief had
entered and stolen the interior of the
instrument. This is one of the most
novel robberies on record."
On Friday evening, shortly after
seven o'clock, a young man, a strang-
er in these parts, clean shaven, wear-
ing dark clothes and felt hat, entered
G. C. Sutton's store at Norwich, and
asked to see a fine gold watch, hunt-

window. Mr. Sutton handed him the
watch to inspect, and the fellow, cooly
