Rabies increase in Huron County Rabies is on the ere ase im°rt Huron County, Dr 14Lt tcer G Clugston, Seaforth, vetetittai4i tan for the Canada Department of Agriculture .Health of Ani mals Branch, informed Huron Cointy.Council last week, Dr. Clugsttenstr sect Pe seriousness of :the epidetruo, stating there were more. than three times the number of cases so far this . year as. in the whole of 1967--60 as against 19. In October, there were no less than 20 cases,. But an irnportant feature was the fact that`eight persons were bitten by four pet cats which were rabid --at Clinton, Port ' Albert, Auburn and Dungannon. The incidence of rabid cats was unusual in his experience, as he had only three others in the six years he has been located in this area. Dr. Clugston said the De- partment of Agriculture rules that each township should have a dog pound to control dogs. Stephen Tt3wnship had set up a pound and he congratulated that township. "It looks like a very excell- ent dog control programme in Stephen. -But I think there should be some cat control, too, in Huron. County, " he declared; Dr. Clugston pointed out that if a dog (or cat) bites a person,' he must notify the Health Unit. These dogs should be tied up, for some day they will be rabid, - he pointed out. The County of Huron pays a fox bounty of $2. 00 but that ii not nearly enough, Dr. Clug- ston said. If the bounty was made high enough, he felt it would clean out the fox popu- lation and Huron County might become rid of rabies.
