The new Golf Club House opens on. Saturday after near-
ly two years on the planning boards. The tete' cost is 1,-
000, of which $6,000 was made up in shares purchased by
the members and $14,000 donated by members, businessmen
and individuals in the community.
Much thought was given to the possible renovation, Of the
old club house, but it was felt It might prove too expensive
in the long run. The new . building contains two floors and
covers a total of 3600 square feet. It has been designed to
accommodate the Curling Club should the two clubs ever
amalgamate in the future.
Members responsible for the planning of the new building
are: Chairman Don Kennedy, Dick •Levan Matt Boyd, Ross
Hamilton. Jim. Saunders, Wilf French and Al LOckle. The
committee was formed during Dick LeVan's presiderity of the
Golf Club and the planning.was originated by Matt •Boyd,
who was then chairman of the building and finance committee.
The land was originally purchased bye J. H. Crawford and
Will French in 1950 and was organized as a club in 1931.
Winched' was in sore need of golfing facilities. The original
Alps Club had . folded in 1942, and these men made the first
step toward establishing the new club.
The property Was originally a farm owned by the Cruick-
shank
ruickshank family—the boyhood home of W. T. "Doc" Cruickshank.
Later a Mr.' Armstrong bought it and built a house there.
building has -been used as the club house up to the present.
After Mr. Armstrong . died his widow put the property up for
sale, when it was purchased by the . club.'
R. H. Lloyd, the first president of . the club, installed the
water pipes and Wilf French and J. 11. Crawford planned the
green* and layed out the course. The work° required a good
dial ,of time and energy due to the shortage of funds.
• The ownership of the prorierty was later transfeired into
the trust of a representative group of executives. A year ago
the club was organized as an incorporated company.
The club. has come a long way since it first started in
1950, far more, perhaps, than Mr. French .and Mr. Crawford
had ever thought possible. The course consists of 75 acres.
bounded _ in part by the Maitland River. Eight acres were
ased in 1951 from the Casemore farm, now owned by
ilf.11aines and another 17 acres were added four years age
on the east side.
The .longest hole is 560 yards and there are nine holes
on the course. Length of -the course is 3020 yards.. Masses
of instruction for beginners have been organized by Mr.
Drench and this year's instructor is Glen Madill. A total of
101 students enrolled :for the course. •
Two hundred playing members is: the target for this year,
plus a large number of social members, the latter a new
category.
Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Chappell are managing the club house,
pro -shop and , greens.
Past presidents have ' all left their mark in the history
of' the golf club. without whose leadership the club might never
h*v'e .progressed A()the extent it has. Among them are many
faraiiliar names. still deeply concerned with the club's welfare:
R: It Lloyd. 1951-1958; Wilfred French, 1959-1980; Dr. W. A.
Crawford. 1961; Norman Welwood. 1962: Ross Hamilton, 1963;
Warren Callan, 1964: Jack Lloyd. 1965; • Dick LeVan; 1966;•
Matt Boyd, 1967; Bili Conron, 1988.
